I hope someone can give me some help or advice. I am from the UK so please forgive me if my question seems a little basic!

I have identified my g-g-grandmother's death in the Connecticut Death Index on Ancestry.com and would very much like to obtain to a copy of the death certificate.

The place of death is shown as: Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut
But her residence is shown as: East Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut

My first question is where would hold a copy of her death record, the Town of East Hartford, or the City of Hartford?

My next question is how do I go about obtaining a copy? Could I get it mailed to the UK and how could I send payment?

Any advice much appreciated!

If you go to : www. vitalrec.com under Connecticut birth & death certificates, you should be able to order it on line!
or go to Hartford.gov & get the address! If you need more help just reply! Good Luck!
Hi Kirsty,

Every US state has a different policy for obtaining vital records, so your question is not basic. Gloria's response is correct. Her suggestion will probably result in the quickest response.

Just to give you some background, the death record will be found in two places in Connecticut: in the vital record office of the town where the death occurred and in the state vital record office (if the event took place 1897 or later, when the state began keeping vital records). Your ancestor probably died while being treated in a hospital in the city of Hartford. East Hartford, a separate municipality, does not have a hospital. Both are in Hartford County.

If you write directly to the city of Hartford or the state of Connecticut, the death certificate will cost $10. Online companies do charge an additional fee to cover their costs. I believe you will pay $25-30 for the death certificate from one of these companies. As I mentioned above, a big advantage of using a company is that they usually send a researcher within a day or two to get the record. If you mail in your request, it will take longer because larger cities such as Hartford, as well as the state, have backlogs of requests for vital records. Another advantage, I believe, is that the problem of exchanging currency will be taken care of for you when you pay online.

One disadvantage is that if you don't know all of the information to fill in the blanks on the online form, you have to find the link for faxing or emailing your request. The online request can't be completed if you don't fill in all the blanks. I have heard that you can just write "I don't know" in some places to trick the computer system, but that won't work for dates.

Good luck and congratulations on finding your gggrandmother's death listed in the index.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Nora
Thank you both for the useful information and Nora for your very detailed reply which has answered many of my questions.

I think my best option will be to go through www.vitalrec.com simply for the ease of sending payment internationally. Hopefully I now have all the necessary details.

My next challenge will be to get a copy of this lady's marriage to her second husband. Unfortunately I don't have a date and can only guess it took place sometime between 1929 when she arrived in the U.S. as a widow and 1930 when she appears on the census in Hartford City with her second husband.

She already knew her second husband - he was her brother-in-law! - so my guess is the marriage took place not long after she arrived and probably in Hartford City as he had been living there since at least 1910.

Thanks once again,
Kirsty
