John Tracy Cunningham replied to Nelda L. Percival's discussion 'What Germanic surnames are you researching (Please list Surname - area and time frame)' in the group Germany and German Ancestry
Kenneth Unusual name, indeed! FamilySearch shows only one, Johann Friedrich Ruraede, b. 17 Sep 1798, Menningenhausen, Sulingen, Hannover, Prussia. This location is actually Menninghausen, now a part of the municipality of Sudwalde; Sulingen proper…

Hi Kathryn Sennfeld is a town of 1,200 just south of Adelsheim. Mosbach, a larger place of about 25,000, is 20 km to the west. Both are north of Heilbronn; you can find them on Google Maps; for Sennfeld, search for Adelsheim and look to the south.…

Hi Lisa There are two possibilities. On Google Maps, type in Maximilianstrasse 22, 13187 Berlin, Germany. It appears to be in the Pankow area of the city, north of the center. There is also a Maximilianstrasse 22, 10317 Berlin, in the Lichtenberg…

John Tracy Cunningham replied to Lynn Palermo's discussion 'Vogel/Vogle family' in the group Germany and German Ancestry
Lynn, You are in for an adventure! The records are in German, and the old "running hand" or Suetterlin script that was used before 1941 must be learned separately, even by younger Germans. It looks like a jagged sawtooth running across the…

Oh, and there is a family book also. This is essentially a book of family group sheets. The parish priest creates a new sheet for each marriage, and then fills in the kids, their marriages, deaths, emigration, etc., as they occur. Great source!

Lynn, You said you have nothing prior to 1833 from Germany, but you have good info on Gabriel's parents and siblings, and the names of grandparents. Do you mean that you have no documentation for these dates? If so, the LDS Family History…

John Tracy Cunningham replied to Brian Zalewski's discussion 'Schoenwalde, Germany' in the group Germany and German Ancestry
The reprinted 1892 Atlas of the German Empire shows three places named Schoenwalde: 1. Schoenwalde am Bungsberg in Schleswig-Holstein, about 10 km east of Eutin. First mentioned 1240. Population 2,500. 2. Schoenwalde in Westpreussen/West Prussia,…

George You may wish to consider switching to Sun's VirtualBox. It's free and works fine, at least for me. I use it to run both PAF and RootsMagic under Windows XP, soon to be Windows 7. One small thing: Can't drag and drop from one…
