BUTLER of Purton and BALL of Sherston
I have some Wiltshire genes on my direct maternal line. My great-great-great grandmother Mary Ann BUTLER was born c.1816 in Purton, Wiltshire, but I don't yet have a baptism for her. She married Moses BALL in 1842 in Walcot, Somerset. Their four eldest children, George, James, Jane and Hannah (my great-great grandmother) were born in Sherston. The family then moved to Westonbirt in Gloucestershire. I'm particularly intrigued by my maternal line because I've had my mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) tested and I belong to haplogroup U4 which is quite rare and mostly found in Finland and Siberia. I am one of only two people in the U4 project from Britain. I wrote a short piece on my blog about my maternal line which can be read here.

Hello Debbie
Is there a chance that Mary Ann was brought up in Purton, but born and/or baptised elsewhere? I wish I had a pound for every one of my ancestors who firmly stated on censuses etc, that they were born in one village, when in truth they had been taken there when small and their father had moved to another farm to work.
Just a thought.

I think she probably was born in Purton but unfortunately the Purton parish registers aren't on the IGI and I haven't yet had a chance to visit the Wiltshire Record Office to investigate further. I might just pay for searches in the Nimrod indexes instead which might be easier.
