WV Presbyterians - Barton and Glen(n)

I actually have two questions related to this topic.

(1) Does anybody know if the Presbyterians baptize babies? I have 2 brick walls that I need to find birth records for circa 1755-1780. Brick wall #1 - Gilbreath Barton s/o Roger Barton and Margaret Gilbreath b. 1770-1775 probably near Winchester, Frederick Co., VA. Brick wall #2 - James Glenn s/o John Glenn and (Jane) Elizabeth Spratt, b. 1759. James says in his pension application that he was born in Berkeley Co., VA; I am assuming he meant Frederick Co.

(2) Does anybody know anything about the Tuscarora Presbyterian Church? Roger Barton (from Brick Wall #1 above) signed a petition with them in 1776. I'm assuming that means it was the church he belonged to.

are you trying to get into the DAR by any chance? Finding birth records that far back are very hard to do Lynette.Do U know which presbysterian church they belong too? Yu might be able to contact the church and see how back there records go. Check and see what year Berkeley Co. was formed and what counties it came out of too.

No (I joined the DAR well over 20 years ago, see my posts to the DAR Group if you'd like to know more).

Roger belonged to Tuscarora (see my original post). Luckily, Tuscarora still has a congregation, but I haven't heard back from them yet. I'm keeping everything crossed that their records are intact (they still meet in the their first stone church built in 1803). They are a small congregation, so I'm hoping it's just because there's not somebody at the church all of the time.

Berkeley County was formed from Frederick County in 1773 so I know James' recollection of being born there is incorrect (see my original post).

Hello, Lynette. Yes, the Presbyterians baptize babies. Have you tried to contact the Presbyterian Historical Society in Philadelphia? That might be a lead.

Also, if you are near the Tuscarora PC, you might check to see if they have the ministerial records from the time frame you are looking at. The records for many Presbyterian churches are sporadic, but the ministers did keep records of what happened within their churches--also, was there any type of Session or Clerk of Records at that time? Our Church did not come into being until 1856 and at that point there was a Session (and we shared our minister with another Church). Another thought is if they had a women's circle or group that met and might have minutes of meetings to check. Since the Church is still in existence, do they have an historian?
