Vital Statistics for births, marriages and deaths in Ontario are avaible from 1869 on. There are some earlier years but there are many gaps.

Births are avialable to the public from 1869-1912

Marriages are available from 1869-1927

Deaths are available from 1869-1937

All of these Vital Stats records are publicly available on microfilm. Another year of Births, Marriages and Deaths is sent annually to the Archives of Ontario. These are restricted until they have been made available on microfilm. The latest transfer (1913 births, 1928 marriages, 1938 deaths) is being filmed and will be available some time in 2010.

Do you know if there are any plans for Ancestry.com to incorporate the most recently released years into their collection?
Rob, as far as I know, Ancestry will add the newly released years to their data, but I'm sure it is way down on their list of "to-do" and it will have to be indexed, transcribed, etc.
Thanks Lorine!
After you find the information in the index, WHERE do you get copies from? I looked all over and everything on the archives site seems to talk about indexes and microfilm. thanks! I need one from 1915 and have the registration umber etc.
Lisa - What index are you referring to? Whatever vital record it is, you must get the microfilm with the full details (certificate/registration image). This is at the Ontario Archives or you can order it in via a Family History Center. However births only go up to 1912 so I don't know what you are finding for 1915 - marriages? Deaths? they are available on mf much later

You may want to look at the instructions given on the Ontario Archives website. It is quite detailed and easy to follow. Ontario Archives

If what you need has not been made public or put on mf you can still get it by ordering a search through the Registrar General Office. The info is on the Ontario Archives website
The first time I looked up a record through the Ontario Archives I found it confusing. Its basically a 2-step process. The actual records are organized on microfilm by registration number, so just having a name and year won't help you find the person you are looking for on that microfilm. You need the registration number to find it! So:

1. Search the index, which is organized by surname to get the registration number, which it sounds like you've already done.

2. Take the registration number and go to the Ontario Archives website to find out what microfilm that registration number is on. Then you get that microfilm and look up the registration number to see the actual record.
