My great grandfather William Henry Valentine Wahlquist was born 15 Feb 1869 in Sedalia, Missouri, and died 12 Sep 1955 in Mammoth Spring, Fulton County, Arkansas. He married ANNIE JANE MELTON 06 Jul 1890 in Mammoth Spring, Fulton County, Arkansas, daughter of NATHAN MELTON and FRANCIS REISNER. She was born 13 Jan 1874 in Ironton, Iron, MO, USA, and died 04 Sep 1935 in Mammoth Spring, Fulton County, Arkansas.

William HV began his career in the publishing business at the age of 13 when he served as an apprentice in Eureka Springs in the shop of H.A. Nickell. When his father (Nelson) left Eureka Springs the three brothers, Wm. HV, George and Charles went with a family to Texas where they learned the printing trade. Charles stayed in Texas. Wm. HV and George returned after three years and settled in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas.
William HV and George bought the Mammoth Spring Democrat in June 1890. Wm. Hv was Jr. Editor and George was editor. Wm. HV discontinued the paper in 1914 when it was consolidated under the name of the Mammoth Spring Progress with one of the three owners being his son, Clyde O. Wahlquist. During this time, Wm. HV started the Phillips County Democrat in Helena, Arkansas, which was sold to Hosea Keeling in 1920, when the name was changed to West Helena Times. In 1920 he revived the Democrat in Mammoth Spring. Wm. HV was owner/editor/publisher of the Democrat until after the death of his wife in 1935.
He became associated with the Philliips County Harold in 1938 in Helena, Arkansas, and was Associate Editor for 6 years. His brother George was editor and son Bryan was also associated with the newspaper. In 1945 he moved to Huntsville, Arkansas, and was on the staff of the Huntsville Record when he celebrated his 80th birthday there.
Wm. HV served in the Arkansas Legislature for 8 years (1925-1932) representing Fulton County Arkansas while living in Mammoth Spring. He served 4 years in the House of Representatives and 4 years in the Senate.
