Hello - my mother's family is from Phelps Co., MO, and my husband's family is from nw Arkansas, so I know the area you are researching. I descend from Earp from Kentucky to Phelps, MO. Are you aware some of the Harp were Earp? Some of these lived in the Rockhouse area south of Eureka Springs, Arkansas almost on the Madison County line, and they may be related to some of my other lines. I have several lines of Brown, and Melton were related by marriage.
Hi Danny:
I'm the group administrator for Most Wanted! Ancestors Lost and Found. We have a discussion, "A Real Challenge," by Rachel Moore about her ancestor, believed William Gardner, who was killed at Johnson County, Arkansas in 1873, shortly after his wife had died there, May 1873. Two children, Charles (then about 4) and Olive Gardner (about 2), were left orphaned.
For some time, Rachel has hoped that a particular Civil War soldier, William H. Gardner (Company A, 1st Iowa Calvary) was her ancestor. Earlier this week, between us, believe we confirmed for her that Mr. Company A William Gardner long survived, dashing any hope of that lead paying dividends in her research.
Before she and I begin to hunt and peck for Civil War records and random pension notes about other William Gardner's, I wondered if you or one of your group members has some Johnson County archive knowledge? I've not researched much at Arkansas, but research of that day usually can produce evidence from newspaper items, orphans town or court records, etc.
Rachel has a beautiful picture of Charles and Olive's parents, it is marked by "Coal Hill Photography." Others with more experience looked at the item and suggest the mounting post dates the death of the parents, and that the mother's photograph may predate the father's by as much as 10 years; between them, the photographs were dated between 1867 and 1870's.
I could go on and on, but see that may have already. If you have time (g), hope you will take a peek at her challenge. Would so appreciate thoughts you have. We'd all like to re-energize Rachel Monroe's challenge.
Thank you for any assistance you may be able to provide. -GJ
