I just added a subdivision of this group called Southeastern Kentucky.

While I really enjoy THIS Kentucky site and I know it's helpful to a great many researchers, I felt it was a bit too broad for my interests. I have been working on the families of Southeastern Kentucky for many years, and would really like to hear from people working in this area. A few of us have been transcribing original source records.. On our web site we present Harlan County Marriage book A, , And soon to be completed and presented is Harlan County Marriage book 1. This material is available for viewing at the following web site.
http://www.cccgenealogy.com/Projects/

We have also extracted the very early tax records of Lee County Virginia and some name specific marriages in Lee County, but I prefer the South Eastern Kentuciy counties as the resource material is to plentiful.

The new Southeastern Kentucky group is for those interested specifically in Floyd, Perry, Harlan, Letcher, Clay, Leslie counties in Kentucky. This is part of the Cumberland Gap and part of Appalachia. When appropriate, our focus could be stretched to include Lee, Scott, and Wise counties in Virginia,

I felt creating single counties would be too limiting. as these families moved around (or the county lines moved around) often.

I hope some of you will find this site helpful.

Thanks, hope to see you there,
Gloria Kay Vandiver Inman

Hi, my family of Powell's is from around the Clay County area, Flatlick, Knox etc. I am currently stuck on my 3rd GGF Levi Powell (1799-1862) He arrived there in Souheastern Ky, around the first of the 1800's, coming from Tn, and NC., where he was born.

Gary Powell
Gary,
Just what I like, a honest to goodness debate. I hope you are up for it too. I just did some preliminary research to make sure I knew what I was talking about (or at least sound like I know)... anyway, you are right, Levi Powell (1799-1862 shows up in the Clay and Knox Co, KY census records from 1830 until his death. Those that list a birth location all say North Carolina. I did not research 1810 and 1820 to see if he showed up in TN.
But when i reviewed other people's trees, It appears that Levi 1799 married twice. 1st in about 1815 (that would make him 16... isn't that a bit young for a fellow?) to Mary Linn. His first child, Rebecca, is listed as being born in 1821, so I would guess that his 1st marriage occurred closer to 1820... do you agree?
Now, they all agree that Mary Linn Powell died in 1831. Without further evidence, I would suspect it was during childbirth.
Now the fun begins. ALL the trees out there (and I think there were 8 or 9) list this Levi 1799 as marrying 2nd to Ann Laws about 1836 in Kentucky, but they have Levi's 2nd through 8th child (all born 1822-1831) as being born to the 2nd wife, Ann Laws. I think this is a serious mistake UNLESS they have the marriage dates mixed up.
Can you shed any light on this matter. Until such time, I moved all the children back to Mary Linn,
Now regarding the last child listed on these other trees.... Mariah born 1844. I do not think this is a child of either Mary Linn or Ann Laws. and I'll share my logic. First, Mary Linn DID have a daughter named Mariah, b,. 1826, so I think it would be highly unlikely the father would appreciate a 2nd child named the same thing as was born to the first wife unless the first had died previous to the birth of the 2nd namesake. but Mariah 1823 is not listed as dying until 1920.... Although, there was definitely a Mariah Powell b. 1844.

now the 2nd reason I do not think Ann Laws gave birth to Mariah b. 1844...If Levi and Ann were married in 1836, as the other researchers seem to believe, it would be very unlikely that she would be childless for 8-10 years before giving birth to her first child. I am more prone to believe that this Mariah 1844, was a grandchild.

Now, as for the parentage of Levi 1799. The many trees state he was born to Elijah Powell (1755-1831) and Morning Wilson (1755-1819). Now, I cannot prove this, and more to the point, I find some evidence supporting it, as Elijah Powell, is found in Clay Co, KY census in 1820 and 1830. I did not do a thorough analysys of his census extract, but it did appear at first glance as though he fell into the much older category. I do find an Elijah Powell (along with several other Powells in 1800 Johnson Co, NC.and in 1810 in Duplin Co, NC without a really thorough analysis, cannot determine if there is any relationship.
One more interesting thought before I close. I found it interesting to find another Levi Powell b. 1777 NC in the early KY census records. and at first glance, I suspected I would find they were related, but after following that Levi for some time, I could not find any connection what-so ever.

Hi, my mother's side of the family is all from Southeastern Kentucky.  Many of them came over the Cumberland through Pound Gap from Virginia and settled in Letcher and surrounding counties. I am looking for any info on Maggards, Mullins, Creech, Short, Vicars, Poston, and Webb.  In particular I am looking for the parents of Sovilah Maggard maiden name Mullins. born 1825.  She married John Henry Maggard. Many people have her parents as "Spotted" Dave Mullins and Virginia Short. But is that isnot accurate. They had a daughter named Surviller, but she wasn't born until around 1850. Sovilah is also known as Savilah and Cerviller. Many of them moved up to Carter, Rowan, and Elliot counties later on.

Any information would be appreciated,

John Adams

Gloria, are you related to the Vandiviers in Mercer County?  My ancestor was Richard Vandivier who married Elizabeth Peavler.  His grandfather was Cornelius Vanderveer.
