I am always interested in  Jones research. I have a Jones brick wall and have worked and researched on this family member for a very long time so I hope I can be of some help to you!  I just looked up the 1850 census for Rutland, Meigs Cty, Ohio and found Timothy and Sina Vining b 1806 in New York. It appears they have a large family and 2 of their children are twins. Does this sound familiar to you?  Following this family up to the 1880 census, Sina reports her parents were born in New York. Let me know if I have your family.

Martha, it sounds like you do have the family I am searching. According to my records, Timothy and Sina Vining had 13 children.  I will search the 1810 census for New York and maybe I can find Sina's parents.  Any help you can be will be very much appreciated.

The 1850, 1860, 1870 census it is stated that she was born in New York however in the 1880 census it is stated she was born in Vermont. Maybe a census error?

When the census takers found the person not at home they would often get their information form the children or neighbors so they would not have to go back.

That's right! I have noticed the same thing in the census with my grandparents. I know their information first hand and can compare that with the census. But I thought I would pass that along anyway! Happy Researching! Now only if I could find my GGGrandfather's parents...

Let me know for whom you are searching and I will keep an eye open for the names.

I am looking for the father of Bluford Hayes "Hayes" Jones born 1829 Alabama. His mother's name is Mary (unknown maiden name) b 1805. Both of his parents were born in S. Carolina. I have his Civil War records and followed him up to 1880. His oldest sibling was b 1822 in Alabama. So I suspect the family moved there abt that time. His youngest sibling was born in 1844, Fayette, Alabama so I think his father probably died sometime between 1844 and 1850 because the family is in that census minus his father. They moved to Chickasaw County, MS about 1852 and lived in MS up the 1880 census. Several of the male decandants have the middle name of Hayes and people during that time would name thier son's after the maiden name of either the grandmother or mother. So with that in mind I thought maybe his mother's maiden name might be Hayes. No luck there either...yet. Surnames that are joinded with my Jones are: Jennings and Eaton. They are all from S and N Carolina and moved to MS. So, I keep searching in the hope I can find a marriage record with the name Mary Hayes. I have searched as much as I can in Al and MS. I think S Carolina is the next search...

Thanks!

Martha

I have them being married on May 3, 1826.  There is a researcher by the name of Thomas Oatney who is related to this line.   Timothy Birum Vining and Sina Jones had Harriet Sina Vining.  Harriet married Britton J. Cook and they had Lillian Maybelle Cook who married a Mr. Lahey.   They had a daughter who married a Mr. Oatney and they had a son named Thomas Oatney.  http://www.oatney.org/Family_Vining.htm  This is his webpage.  He may be of some assistance to you.  Good luck.

The link you posted is a great help.  Thank you.
