Origin of name

From Brittany, the old name use to be written "Caduudal" meaning "firm in combat" It was a war name given before the Christian era, it was not hereditary.

Le patronyme d'aujourd'hui est une variante graphique de Cadudal. D'origine bretonne, il est isssu de l'ancien nom guerrier "Caduudal" qui siginifiait "ferme au combat". Chez les bretons, les noms à consonance guerrière furent portés avant l'ère chrétienne à une époque où les celtes n'avaient qu'un seul nom unique qui n'avait pas de caracatère héréditaire.


Ce nom était noté "Caduudal" en 840, "Catuuodal" en 872, "Cadodal" en 1060 dans le cartuaire de Redon. Il fut illustré par un célèbre chef Chouan Georges Cadoudal.
