Murphy Women

The two oldest women in this photograph are the sisters Fanny Murphy Short (1843-1926) and Mary Ann “Polly” Murphy Walker (ca. 1833-1928). All the others are Polly’s daughters (with one possible exception). Top row: Matilda Jane “Tillie” Walker Short (ca. 1857-1943), Fillis Ann “Anna” Walker Eads (1876-1964), Josephine “Josie” Walker Waits (1864-1959), and Fanny. Bottom row: Martha Ellen Walker Hunter (1860-1917), Polly, and Elizabeth Walker Whitaker (b. 1856). The handwritten note on the original photograph identifies the woman at the left bottom row as Matilda Walker; if so, then she was not one of Polly’s daughters but more likely Matilda Walker Short (wife of Matthew Short). If the woman in question is Martha, then this picture must predate 1917 (when Polly would have been about 84 years old); if she is Matilda Walker Short, then the picture could be as late as 1926 (when Polly would have been about 93).
