George William Turner was b. Feb. 1860 at Missouri and d. 27 Mar 1932 at St. Joseph, Washington Twp., Buchanan, Missouri. He m. Delilah Catherine Toothman on 26 Jun 1886 at St. Joseph, Buchanan, Missouri. They had a total of eight children, with five living on the 1880 census. I have been told that there is a relationship with the Crosswhite’s, possibly cousins, but I can’t find anything yet.

With all this information, one would think I could find his parents. But, alas, NO! There are 80 George W. Turners born in Missouri in 1860, then add a year on either side and it’s well over 100. After checking all the states census records, I still cannot find his parents or any siblings if any.

I have been looking at ALL the Turner’s in Missouri systematically , one by one, eliminating families. I even thought I had a great possibility, only to find it wasn’t my George :( I am thinking of the possibility that his parent’s may have died and left him and hopefully some siblings, with others.

Grandpa Turner never knew his grandparents and on George’s death cert. Ukn is listed for both his father and mother, with his daughter providing the information. No one in the family talked about this side of the family, as they didn’t have much information.

Any ideas? This is my paternal direct line, so I really would love to know more.
P.S. I’ve checked for wills, probates, land records, anything I can think of to find his parents.

Leonora was my great aunt, George's daughter. They lived in houses next door to one another. I am guessing, at this point, that money was tight as George was a "junk man" and Delilah didn't work. They tended to live within two or three blocks, S. 10th, 11th, 12th for many years. I do have the death certificates of Geo's and Delilah's children, but they only have the information I already know.

I have actually looked at all the Buchanan death and birth certificates and have been systematically going county by county. So far no hits.

I have all the names from the census, tax, directories, cemeteries, and anything that may have a Turner.
Grandpa only talked about his Mother's side, the Toothman's. Another genealogist told me that the Turner's were cousins of the Crosswhite's, which was Grandma's maiden name. Unfortunately, she died before she gave me the information, and her family disposed of all her records as they weren’t interested.

So, little by little, I check and eliminate or put in the possibility pile for further research.
I know you've looked, but what does the 1870 census show for the Turner families in Missouri?
I have checked them all but no connection. Any George Turner born even near 1860 has been traced. I wanted Since Nabraska is just across the river, I have even checked there. Still no luck.
I thought this was the right family also, but had to rule them out. I also have found an Edward Turner with a son the right age that moved to Missouri, but the son married and had children, but not my children.

Thank you so much for looking. I do hope this wall will be broken down.
I’ll try to answer the questions in order:

George and Delilah never owned a home, only rented.
The children’s correct names are as follows:

Elbert Samuel b. 10 Jul 1886, St. Joseph, Buchanan, Missouri, d. 28 Sep 1974 St Joseph, Andrew, Missouri.

*George Percy (Grandma always called him Percy, but census show first name as George) b. 23 Apr 1887, St. Joseph, Buchanan, Missouri, d.7 Jan 1974, Santa Ana, Orange, California. He married Goldie Ettaline Crosswhite 17 July 1915, St. Joseph, Buchanan, Missouri.

Edna D. b Jan 1890, St. Joe., m John E. Wigins on 30 Aug 1908. I have no death for her. I just forgot to look for more info on her. Their children are:
Orval L. b Oct 1909, St. Joe
Elvie b. abt 1912 in Missouri
Harry b abt 1918 in Missouri
I don’t have anymore info on this family. Guess I should look

Lenora B., b. Mar 1895, St. Joe, d.29 Oct 1969 Oklahoma m. Orla Murphy unknown when. One child, Harry b. 1919 Missouri died young.

Buland Arburn b. 7 Jul 1899 St. Joe, d. Oct 1977, St. Joe., m Abby Davidson in 1925, no children.

The Toothman’s all moved together from Decatur, Indiana, to Missouri. Delilah’s mother Sarah Ann Cornelius died at home and was buried on The Waller Farm on Sparta Rd. SE Of St. Joe. Did not find it.

Most of the Toothman’s left Missouri by the 1930’s from what my Aunt said. I tried to get addresses for them, but my Aunt wouldn’t give me anything. She had names and addresses, but refused to give the information to me.

We are leaving in a couple of hours for Salt Lake, so I won’t see any emails for about 8 hours or so.

Thanks for all the help, Cary
I did a check of the 1870 Missouri Census for a George Turner born between 1855 and 1865. The attached acrobat file contains the list of the results.

I am sure you have checked all these families out, but just in case, I have uploaded the list. Some of these George Turners are too young and others are too old, but it is a good spread.

Thank you Barbara, I will look into the list you gave. Since I'm not home, I don't have my list of whom I have eleminated, but I'll look as soon as I get home.

Yes, the Toothman's lived in Mercer county, as well as Buchanan county. I've looked for Turner's all over that area with no luck. That is why new eyes is good. I've looked for so long I could miss something important and not even know it.

My Turner's, George Percy and Goldie left Missouri for California with my dad, Raymond George, and my Aunt Viola. One Aunt was already living in California with her husband. My Aunt Thelma and her husband, Ray, moved to California about the same time. They left the same year George William died, 1932, but what month I don't know. Grandpa's brother's and sister's stayed. From what I was told, the Toothman's had already left Missouri, or at least St. Joseph. But, my Aunt Evelyn wouldn't give me any info on where I might have found them.
