Walton County
I am searching two lines of my maternal ancestors in Walton County.
First - my maternal grandfather's mother's line. My grandfather, Lucillous Hosch, and his brothers, Will and Hosea, were reared by their maternal grandparents, Wyatt and Alice Rome (their parents died when they were little boys). Wyatt's mother was Eliza Stoval. My granddad had an uncle named Henry Rome (Mammie). He also had a cousin Henry (Henry and Mammie's son) that later migrated to Michigan (died in 1991). Through all the "misspellings" of the Rome surname, I've been able to find my great-great grandparents on every census between 1870 and 1910 (Alice died sometime between 1900 and 1910). Have not checked the slave schedules, yet, but based on the 1870 census it appears that the Romes / Stovals did not take on the name of their last owner. So, I need to establish the last owner then go from there. Also, would like to reconnect with other descendants of Wyatt and Alice that could possibly still be living in Walton County.
Second - my great grandmother (grandmom's mom), Fannie ???? Pierce. I'm not sure that she was originally from Walton county. Her surname was White at the time she and my great-grandfather, Cornelius Pierce were married. They married in 1889 in Walton County. Based on stories handed down from my grandmother, her surname was Henry. It could also be Henyard. So I think there was possibly a marriage before great-granddad. My grandmother also handed down that one of her grandmothers was 1/2 White and 1/2 Indian. Obviously have not come across evidence to support or reject the story. mtDNA for Fannie's line shows Haplogroup M. As of yet, no exact matches and no good matches to any indigenous groups. Have only found Fannie on the 1900 and 1910 census at which time she and great-granddad are married. She's my current brick wall for this line. I've attached a pic of Fannie with my post. It's the only picture the family has of her. Should also add that my great-grandfather died in 1910 and Fannie remarried shortly there after (possible surname Sanford). Fannie is thought to have died around 1916 (my grandmother passed down to mom that she was pregnant with one of my uncles when Fannie died. My uncle was born in 1916).

I am researching several of my daughter-in-law's ancestors in Walton County. I have just started helping her research, so we haven't gotten very far. Her family either can't or won't help her so we are starting from scratch. Jesse Thompson was born 1876 in probably Walton county. He was married to Ginnie ?. His death was between the 1900 and 1910 census. Ginnie either remarried or died between the 1910 and 1920 census as I can't find her after the 1910 census.
Thomas Martin Still was born in 1850 probably in Walton county. His father may be Martin Still and mother is unknown. Thomas first married someone with the initials of L.A. and they had 5 children. Next Thomas married Nancy Ann (Nannie) Smith abt 1889 when Nancy was abt 14 years old. They had 7 daughters.I have not been able to find who Nancy's parents were. -

Oh Valerie you have made my day! The information from the book confirmed a couple of things I wasn't sure about and added alot of new information. I had to get my daughter in law out of bed so I could read the information to her. She is just as excited as I am. We have just started researching her family and haven't gotten much help from her family. Thomas Martin Still was her great great grandfather, and she has never seen a picture of him. You don't know how appreciative we are for any information you can give us. Thnak you so much!

Since you are in the Walton County area, I have a question for you regarding Sheats / Sheets (black) cemetery. Do you know if this is on private property? Whenever I do my research trip, my mother and I would like to go by there and see if perhaps there are tombstones for other relatives. Last month, a volunteer (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gacemete/page15.html), went there for me and took pictures of my great-grandfather's tombstone as well as that of my grandmother's first cousin. I understand the cemetery is behind a locked cattle gate and the cemetery itself is in a state of disrepair.

I think I've only been to Walton County once and it was to a funeral. I think I was in HS at the time. It was one of my great Uncles by marriage.
My grandparents were from the Social Circle area.
Here is the info I found on FindAGrave for the cemetery
GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 33.75310, Longitude: -83.61500
However, I'm not sure if that is right as I understand there were two Sheets / Sheats cemeteries, one for whites and one for blacks. It's the one for blacks that I'm interested in.
The volunteer that went there for me said it was on Sheets Cemetery Road. He also said it's spread over about 3 acres. Hope that helps.

Thank you. Bob Kelly, a volunteer in the area (previously mentioned volunteer site), went there in for me last month and snapped pictures of my great-granddad's headstone and grandmother's cousin (just happened to be beside great-granddad - didn't know she was there). Mom and I thought we would look around and see if there were other names we recognized.
If you venture over there, some of the family surnames are Pierce (Cornelius, my great grandfather, and Mood, grandmom's cousin, I already have), Hosch, Rome, and Stoval. Also possibly a Fannie Sanford (great grandmom, who remarried after Cornelius' death) and Mattie Martin (grandmom's older half-sister). Other surnames that could possibly be connected are Philips and Durden. -

It's Christmas in July! I haven't even had my morning caffeine yet, and probably shouldn't be typing yet (excuse any typos and grammar errors). The info you posted was so, so SO helpful. I can't thank you enough! If I can ever do anything for you let me know. I am in the White, Habersham area. The info you gave has given us several more generations than we had, and filled out each family. I am going to go now and try to digest all this info! Again, Thanks so much!

I have heard that the Sheats (Sheets) Cemetery is now privately owned. Or that someone had bought the property right up to the above cemetery boundary & will not allow any of the family members of those buried there to bury any one else there. I have some pics of the Malcoms buried there & are related to the Akridges. My husband was using my computer one night & hit the "recovery key" by mistake. So, I've been working to put it back in working order. Some of the pics of the Malcom headstons have disappeared. When I get them back I'll upload them. Going to start backing up my files. I didn't really think anybody else was being buried there but was wondering about getting access to it to see if any other ancestors might be buried there.
A cemetery look-up volunteer went there for me back in May/June and confirmed that my great-grandfather, Cornelius Pierce, was buried there. He took pictures of the tombstone and e-mailed them to me. I also lucked out as one of my grandmother's first cousin's was buried right beside my great-grandfather, so I got a picture of her tomstone, too. -

First of all u know abt the Martins (African-Americans) in Walton Co. GA You know abt my Uncle Thomas "Tom" Martin who was the brother of my Grandfather Albert Waymon Martin and their father was Tyler Martin & their Mother Sally Ann (don''t know her surname)
My Grandmother was Mattie Lou Akridge & her father's name was Ransom Akridge all of Walton Co. GA
I'm also working on my father's side of the family as well. My father's name was Paul Robinson of Oconee Co. GA His father's name was George T Martin of Oconee Co. GA His mother's name was Ella Porter of Oconee Co. but died in Athens, Clarke Co. My paternal Grandfather's name was Swep Robinson of Oconee Co. GA & was married to Mary Ann (don't have her maiden name) This is getting to be a little long. Thank u for your patience. I know that GGrandfather Swep Robinson was buried in the Oconee Co Cemetery, Watkinsville. I found this death certificate of GGGrandfather Swep Robison(Robison was changed to Robinson) at the Georgia's Virtual Vault Death Certificates Web Site. i'm going to be sharing this info with a Robinson cuz in Californaia. Stella - looking at the lineage on your dad's side, I'm wondering, could there be a possible connection between your two Martin lines. I need to look at Oconee county more myself as my Pierce ancestors were there for a period of time during the 1890s. On their WWI Draft Registration cards, my three great uncles indicated they were born in Watkinsville. Don't know if my great-grandparents were there do to family ties or not. -

Interesting? Never can tell! Let me know what u find out. I'm going to try to upload my paternal G Grandfather Swep Robison (Robinson) death certificate. It's confusing, because my Mom remembered him been married to a Mary Ann, but on the death certificate it has a Lizzie as his wife. But a Lizzie Paldo was married to his son, Seymour Robinson & they moved to Detroit Michigan, USA Don't know if Swep Robison was married twice or once. I'm going to send the death certificate of Swep Robison (Robinson) to a Paldo/Robinson Cuz in California. I'll let u know if I hear anything from my Cuz in California.
Lastly, i received an E-mail from Walton Co. GA re the Malcoms there. I'll let u know if I get any more info re the Malcoms.
