I am trying to find imformation or relatives on my Great Grandad's family. He was Alexander Keith Smart.
He was born at 55 Dundee Loan, Forfar, Angus and had 3 brothers and one sister. He moved to Liverpool around 1901 and married Alice Watkinson and had three children..

I have traced them back to abt1560 with Gilbert but I am finding it harder trying to find living relatives.

Does anybody now anything about this family?

Hi Julie,

Descendant tracing is actually quite straightforward in Scottish records, so if Alexander Keith Smart's siblings remained in Scotland you should be able to find out what happened to them.

If you already have the names and dates of birth of the siblings the next step would be to find their death records. These will tell you not only when and where they died but also the names of their spouses (enabling you to find marriage records for them) and if you are lucky you may find the informant of the death is a child of the deceased which gives you another name to follow up.

You can then search for the children of each of the siblings, their marriages, children, deaths etc. and so on up to the present.

You won't be able to do all of this online but you can do it at the ScotlandsPeople Centre in Edinburgh - website: http://www.scotlandspeoplehub.gov.uk/ There is a £10 a day charge but this allows you to view as many records as you want in full.

Once you have the names of living descendants you may be able to find current addresses through phone books or electoral rolls. You should be aware though that not everyone shares our interest in genealogy so you may not always get a favourable response!

I do a fair amount of this type of research so if you need any help please feel free to send me a message through GenealogyWise or contact me at enquiries@myainfolk.com

Thank you so much for your help regarding this gentleman.
My main problem is that I live in Wallasey, Wirral and have no way to access the records in Edinborough. Is there any way or other sites that I can use online?
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk now has indexes to births and deaths up to 2006 but only images of births up to 1908, marriages up to 1933 and deaths up to 1958. You can order certificates for later records through the site at a cost of £10 each after you have identified an entry in the index (which uses up credit).

As records later than the dates mentioned above may relate to living persons I think it is unlikely that images will be made available online. If you are not able to come to Edinburgh to search in person then the other option is to hire a professional researcher.

Thank you for all your help. I will have to wait till the kids are back to school so that I can think straight.
Thanks again for all the information.
