Hi everyone!

One of my ancestors up in Banffshire is listed on the 1881 Scotland census having an occupation of 'Joiner & Leston'...

Can anyone shed any light on what a 'Leston' is please?

Andrew - could you upload an image of the census, we could then have a look at the entry.

Hi Betty,

I've not got the full census listing I'm afraid. I use Ancestry.com and they only have access to the basic information, they're not permitted to show a copy of the document for some reason.

It might well be that 'leston' has been transcribed incorrectly, is that what you are thinking?

Andrew
Yes I think that may have happened - if you post the name I can have a look at the image. Betty
Thank you Betty, most appreciated!

Sorry, it is in the 1901 census that 'leston' is reported.

Charles Thain : Birth 13 Feb 1832 in King Edward, Aberdeenshire.
Charles is living in Berryhillock, Alvah, Banffshire at the time of this census.

What do you use to look at the Scottish census reports?

Thanks again - Andrew
Andrew. First Charles is a joiner and Sexton. He is living next but one to the Manse so is very near the church and how handy to have a joiner as the sexton - some on site to do repairs!
The website to use for Scottish census images is www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. You register and then buy 30 credits for £6.00 which allow you to look at the original documents. To get to a document costs 6 credits so it is worth identifying as close as possible from other sources what you are looking for. As sexton there may be more info on him in the session records of the church which are held by the National Archives of Scotland.

Betty, you're a star! Thank you ever so much for clearing this up for me, most appreciated.
Now I know where to look it will make things a little easier for me.

Thanks again,
Andrew
