The mystery of the old family Bible and who is Frank Molloy?

A very dear cousin recently gave me a large old bible, which belonged to our Great-Grandmother, Mary Belle Doyle (Carr). No births or family tree listed, Just an inscription in the front. The bible was a gift from her nephew. In the bible is a newspaper clipping of the funeral of Frank Molloy. Frank was a young man who drowned in 1886  in Pine Lake, Laporte, Indiana. So the big question is Why did my GGrandmother have this clipping in the bible? an even bigger mystery is..My GGrandma was born in 1886 in Virginia, the same year that frank died. I have searched & searched..can't seem to figure out how he relates to my family. Who is Frank Molloy and is he related to my family??   Hmmm...and the search continues..

Mary was born in Campbell Co, Lynchburg, VA. I believe that she grew up there or in the surrounding counties. I have not yet located her in the 1900 census. She moved to Monroe, Buxton, Iowa around 1900, maybe shortly after..It was there that she married Peter Doyle in 1903. I'm sure that there is much to be found  in Virginia. Thank you.

You're welcome Denise.  I know sometimes I need a break from my own family research. I have sometimes been able to help others with their families.  I will start looking on this end.  If it ever goes down that road, I live in VA and would be willing to go to the library here to find further information if needed. You can answer these questions in email or on your blog post -- whatever makes u more comfortable.  What city/county did Mary Belle's birth take place and where was she living afterwards?

I totally understand. It would still be pretty amazing if that clip just happened to be in there.  By her being an evangelist... there might be some connection there.  I'd be happy to look into it with you. Do some research on my end to see if I see anything different.  It is up to you.

From my findings, he was born in Indiana. That is a good point, maybe the bible did belong to someone else. maybe her parents or her husbands, or like you say, a neighbor. I did some digging. His mother was was called the Temperance Evangelist. You may know her name was Emma Molloy Barrett. Some interesting news on the internet  about her. I sure hope I can figure this one out. It's been driving me crazy.

I find this to be a peculiar situation.  I would love to see you get to the bottom of it.  Because if you can't tie it to her, you may find a tie the generation earlier. It has to have some significance even if it was a neighbor's son or something. Do you know if Frank was born in VA or IN?

Hi Denise,  No, Not really. The only thing that I have found out is that the newspaper clipping was originally in a different bible. A huge leather bound bible with an engraved cover. It belonged to my great-grandmother also. My cousin has this old bible, it's in very bad shape and falling apart. So I'm still searching.

Hi. I'm just coming across this.  Have you gotten any additional information regarding Frank?
