"I've got a line on LaPointe ancestors in Canada, but they seem to have anglicized even their first names before they dropped their surname dit LaPointe in favor of LaPointe. Any ideas on pushing the line farther back? Farthest was John LaPointe…"

Hello Thomas....You may already have the following information:

Margaret La Pointe provided the location of Philadelphia, PA as her birth place according to the California Passenger & Crew Lists, 1893-1957 via Ancestry.com.  Please to let me know if you may need a copy of the document.

Interestingly enough, Margaret La Pointe is listed under the Social Security Index with the SS# of 546701739.  She is noted under the California Death Index 1940-1997 with the SS# of 554381459.  You may want to consider, if you have not done this already, requesting the SS-5 Form for your Margaret La Pointe using both ss# numbers.  Perhaps one of them is actually her husband's original ss-#.  Perhaps the information that she provided on the SS-5 form might give you some clues to her parents.  Perhaps her death certificate might offer some clues as well.  I hope this helps! Allen
