For what reason did you start genealogy research?
I've always been fascinated with history and how we ourselves are part of it. Once I started and began uncovering my families' pasts, I was hooked! So many stories ... so many scrambled truths ... and a few skeletons in closets! Already my daughter has asked to be given all I have amassed when it's her turn. But I suspect both my sons will be right there too.

Any Railroad Savvy People Out There?

I have been searching for years now for more information on my greatgrandfather's accident while he was an 'engineer for the Northern Pacific on a western division' (according to his obituary) or, while working for Chicago Northwestern as a brakeman (according to a family member)Clayton Dick Herbert lost his leg in a railway accident ... that much I am certain of. I'm assuming this happened between 1870 and 1880 but am not positive of that. I'm basing my assumption on finding him as a day… Continue

Nancy, my name is Cheryl.  I have a great interest in the Keehns as that is my maiden name.  My family leads directly back to Arthur Ruger Keehn.  I have run into the same issue that you have with locating Louie (Luey) Luning (Lunning).  From what I am gathering he may be either Norwegian or Swedish.  I have had one of my children DNA tested and there is Scandinavian influence in our bloodline.  Anyway, I thought you might like to connect with another Keehn working on the same mystery.

Nancy,

I am sorry for your loss.  I have lost some loved ones recently too and my mom is a recent widow.  Take your time, surround yourself with people that care about you and let yourself grieve.  Those roller coaster emotions may pop up every once in a while. I will keep you in my prayers.  No rush on any Genealogy stuff.. it can wait. Writing a journal can help in your grieving process and talking about your feelings with loved ones helps too. Take good care.

Hi Nancy,

I remember reading somewhere...maybe it was the history of Manlius, Onondaga County, New York that the name was originally spelled Kuehn.  I will look through my info and see if I can figure out where I saw it.  I just finished a 23 page research report on Hiram Coon b. 1832 (Manlius, Onondaga, New York d. 1875 Palmyra, Jefferson, Wisconsin.

Hi Nancy,

I could not post my oldest Coon ancestor on the comment space so please look at my blog on Genealolgy Wise to see it. The post is a timeline for Ephriam Coon with partial dates for his children. I am descended from Hiram Coon's Daughter Ada Coon who married Francis Darling Riddell.

Nancy, Were your Kuehns located in New York or Wisconsin? I have Coon ancestors that were from Manlius, Onondaga, New York and then in Wisconsin, in the Palmyra, Jefferson County, Wisconsin.

Nancy, I also have three ancestors that worked for Chicago Northwestern: Christian DeYoung (1890), Phillip Dahlberg and Gustav Dahlberg. I will keep my eyes out for Claydon Dick Herbert if you keep your eyes out for my three guys in Railroad records.
Have you tried looking in newspaper collections for the obit?
