My earliest Oakes, that I've been able to trace is probably 2nd generation Massachusetts Bay Colony Puritan. John Oakes of "Marlboro" m. Experience Walcott of Salem, Massachusetts, 3 July 1732. My great grandfather, Ransom Oakes arrived in the new state of Oregon, on the west coast in 1876, where I was born in 1937.
Since retiring in 1997, I have been very busy, my wife says obsessed, with genealogy. The last few years primarily in the new field of genetic genealogy. If you are not familiar with that, check our website: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Oak/default.aspx
Most of the members are Americans, like myself, that know our Oakes/Oaks ancestors came from the UK, but, like mine, probably came to the colonies illegally and left few tracks. So we are keenly interested in finding DNA matches with either residents of the Uk or an Oakes/Oaks with a known paper trail.
Do you know any of the history of Oakes in Scotland, prior to your Thomas?
My DNA, as does most of the Oakes/Oaks in our project, indicates Anglo-Saxon roots. I am following very closely the current discussions on the history from the 5th through 9th century after the Romans left and the influx of the Nordics and Anglos, Jutes and Saxons. Much of it being revised due to DNA testing. Fascinating combination, this history and microbiology for an old retired engineer.
