Bette,

You wrote me on 16 May 1999 after finding a query I posted on the Iowa County, Wisconsin GenWeb page, asking about the Garvey family.  I have no record of ever replying to your message, and if so, I apologize with 13 years' interest!
First, thank you for posting the John Milledge obituary and Civil War pension records on Ancestry.com.  They are the only documentation I have seen for John's date and place of birth and death, as well as the interesting detail they provide on his Civil War service, his physical description, and injury.
My wife is Sharon Garvey Scanland.  She is descended from Mary Ann Milledge's parents Cornelius Garvey and Sophronia Lyons through their youngest son and last child, Cornelius Albert Garvey.  I have been gathering information for a Garvey family history off and on since the 1990s.

Here is what I have on John and Mary Ann, aside from his obit and pension records.  You probably have all of it.

1.  Federal census records:  1850 for John and Mary Ann in their respective parental families.  1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, and 1910 for John and Mary Ann and their family.  1920 for Mary Ann.

2.  Iowa state census:  1885 for John and Mary Ann together, 1895 for each of them separately, 1905 for Mary Ann, 1915 for each of them separately, and 1925 for Mary Ann.

3.  A citation to one of his land transactions as follows:  on 15 Oct 1864 he sold 40 acres of land to a Lucy D. Bigelow.  The land is described as the southeast quarter of the southeast quarter of Section 18 of Township 8 Range 2,   This transaction is recorded in Iowa County, Wisconsin land records, vol. 11, p. 226 and is available at the Ancestry.com web site.

My questions are --

1.  If you have the citation for John Milledge's obituary (name of newspaper, date and page number), I'd appreciate having that information.

2.  If you have found the family of Cornelius Garvey and Sophronia Lyons in the 1860 census, or have any information on their place of birth and parentage, I'd also appreciate having that information.  So far, Cornelius and Sophronia are our "stone wall."

I believe Cornelius was born in the Dutch part of upstate New York, perhaps in Chatham Township, Dutchess County, or in Saratoga County, based on the fact that there are Cornelius Garveys there in the early 1800s and late 1790s.  There were also Garveys in New York City (New Amsterdam) as far back as the 1720s, I believe.

In your 1999 email you mentioned being able to send me a packet of information. I would greatly appreciate having that information!

Thanks, and again our apologies for losing track of your 1999 message.
