I am researching the family of Sabra Wood. She was one of my GGGrandmothers on my mother's side. Sabra's parents were Thomas and Elizabeth Butcher Wood. Thomas was born abt. 1771. Sabra was born in Surry Co.,NC so they moved there at some point if he was not born there. Do not know for sure where he was born. Thomas and Eliz. were listed in the 1850 Surry Co. census as living in the Rockford District. Would love to have additonal info on this family.

I am research the line of Squire (or possibly Charles) Wood, b c 1802 in NY or VT, marr to Jerusha Taylor b c 1804 VT. Earliest I have them is 1830 in Fowler, St Lawrence, NY. They had moved to Turin, Lewis, NY by 1840, where they remained till after 1860. I have 11 children for them:
Josiah Daniel b 1825 NY- to Erie co, PA by 1860 and WI in 1870s
2 unknown daughters b 1825-1830
Jason S b c1829 NY or VT- to WI by 1855
Ransom b 1832 NY- to Chautauqua co, NY by 1855, the to Erie & Warren cos, PA
Lucinda b c1833 NY
Charles H b 1835 NY- to Erie co, PA by 1870, then to MI
Melinda b c1836 NY
Paulina b c1838 NY
Ellen (Nellie) b 1843 NY- mar to Albert Neff and in Erie co, PA by 1870, mar to Walter Work by 1880 still in Erie co, in Chicago by 1900. Mother Jerusha lived with her after Squire's death in 1864 (at home of one of his sons in Erie co) till her death in 1881.
Truman b c1845 NY- supposedly ran away to join the army in 1863 under the assumed name of Lafayette Brown. Was a POW and died at Salisbury Prison, NC.
Indications are that Squire may have been born in VT, but at least his parents were from there. The Wood Family Index indicates that there was a Charles Wood in Essex co, VT whose children included Squire and Charles, but says that Charles married Jerusha Taylor, not Squire. It goes on to show Charles and Jerusha in NY with their children, who are listed as Josiah, Jason, Mary, Lucinda, Truman, Martha, Ransom, Melinda, Rosina, and Ellen (very similar to what I have).
Now, the dilemma: The census records all show Squire Wood in St Lawrence & Lewis counties, I have a death notice from a Lowville NY paper saying Squire, a former resident of Turin (Lewis co) had died at the home of his son in PA, and son Charles' MI death cert listed his parents as Squire Wood & Jerusha Taylor. BUT I found a death cert for Nellie E Work, who I believe to be daughter Ellen, listing her parents as Charles Wood & Jerusha Taylor.
I suppose it could be a case of middle and first names getting switched around, which happened often enough, and the Wood Family Index may be incorrect in showing brothers Squire and Charles. In addition, it said that their father Charles lived in Brandon, Essex co, VT in 1790, and that all his children were born in Essex co, but Essex county didn't exist untill after that, and Brandon was (and still is) way over in Rutland county. I haven't been able to locate a Charles Wood at all in Essex county through the early censuses.

So, does anyone have any familiarity with this line? I had been stuck at Squire for years, recently found the Wood index info and thought I'd finally cracked my brick wall, and now with the death certs, I'm left confused as to who Squire actually was.

I am researching the Thomas Wood family in Caroline Co, MD in the early 1800s. Father may have been Joseph Wood. Other Woods are from Frederick, Calvert, and Somerset Counties, but I have been unable to connect them. Any other researchers working on MD Woods?

I'm trying to find out about my great grandfather. I know almost nothing about him, not even his first name, but I decided it was worth a try. All I know is he was Scottish, his surname was Wood and had 3 children (that I know of) with an English woman. The three children were named Hugh, Harry and Janet. Hugh, my grandfather, changed his name to William at some point and was often known as Bill. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Researching Woods from Scotland. My bunch was from the Edinburgh area then re-located to Ireland in the 1840s and at some point (during the 1860s I think) came to Ontario, Canada before eventually settling in Isabella Co., Michigan in the 1880s.
