My Wisconsin Family: Toepfer (was originally Hrncir), Benes/Benesch, Straka, Maertz/Marz, Hajek

Hi,

My family lived in Milwaukee, immigrated in the mid 1860's from Bohemia. Some other related names Poshepny and Krofta.

Thanks,

Roberta

Thanks so much for the reply but I have a feeling there is no connection. The family was from Bohemia, Karl Maertz came from Kout which was a town rather near the border with Germany. A couple of members of my family took on the German form of their name after moving to Milwaukee. The early records show the name as Merz or Marz. My Toepfer relatives were originally Hrncir (both names mean the same thing, Potter.)

Alway appreciate any help or hints,

Roberta
I am seeking information on Johann and Wilhelmina (Rusch) MAERTZ. They arrived in Milwaukee in 1852 and lived there for 1-2 years before buying land in Reedsville, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. Their son, Friedrich C. Maertz and his wife Eva later raised their family in Milwaukee.
