Two John FLOYDs appear in the historical record with possible connections to our FLOYD line. The first seems to be well documented on the internet, and appears to be the son of Robert F. FLOYD of Culpeper County. He was born about 1763 in Culpeper County and died 1 NOV 1823 in Preble Co., OH. He married Mary Magdalena HOUSE (HAUSS?) 15 DEC 1789. She was the daughter of Mathias HOUSE and was born 1773 in House Hollow, Madison Co., VA and died 26 MAY 1840. John and Mary are buried in the Roselawn Cemetery in Lewisburg, OH.

The second John is very interesting. He filed his Revolutionary War pension application 17 MAY 1833 when he was living in Lawrence Twp., Washington Co., OH and was 86 years old. This was after the passage of the Revolutionary War Claims Act of 7 JUN 1832. This act required the court to ask specific questions of the applicant. As a result, John’s application has a history of where he lived over the years as opposed to Henry’s which provided a list of his dependants. Of particular note in the application is the reference to his “brother who resides near Morgantown, Virginia” and has possession of the family bible.

Approximate timeline for John FLOYD from his pension application:

1747 born near Anapolis MD (Anne Arundel County)

1780 drafted (33 years old) and discharged after 3 months (Berkley County)

1781 drafted again and discharged after Yorktown (Oct 1781)

1782 moved to Hagerstown,MD

1784 moved to Harpers Ferry

1786 moved to Cheat River

???? lived near ? Pennsylvania

1803 moved to Westmoreland County, PA

1818 moved to Washington County, OH

1832 Pension application (86 years old)

Of particular note:

  • This John was drafted into service in Berkley Co. Henry enlisted in Berkley County.

  • John was in the Cheat River area before Henry & Michael.

So, who supports John’s application? None other than Michael FLOYD and Benjamin SATTERFIELD both of whom filed affidavits in support of Henry’s application! And yes, the mark of Michael is the same on both documents. Before his relocation to Monongalia County, I can only place Benjamin in BERKLEY County. I cannot place him in Culpeper.

Fast forward to 23 NOV 1840 when John appears in Court to have his pension payments transferred to Monongalia County where he recently “accepted the friendly invitation of a brother and friends living in the state of Virginia who promised to aid in supporting him as long as he lived”. Now, the question is what FLOYD in Monongalia County could have had a 93 year old brother other than Michael? I don’t have any in my records, but a thorough search of the 1840 census might be in order.

Hi Daniel,

I have some information that you may already know at this point. I am related to the Floyds through Elizabeth Floyd, wife of George Foulk. I believe the second John Floyd you mention above is Elizabeth's father and I can possibly help fill in some gaps or at least provide additional confusion!

George Foulk was born 1774 in Frederick County, VA to Jacob and Margaret Foulk. Before the turn of the 19th C., George is living in Monongalia, along with the rest of the Foulk clan, especially his father Jacob.

on 6 Jan 1798, James and Mary Matheny sold land on Cheat River to Henry Floyd. Jacob Foulk was witness

On 9 Mar 1804, John Floyd (of Fayette Co. PA) was sold 11 1/2 acres on Pharoah's Run by Christopher and Mary Erwin. This as part of 90 acre tract of land sold by Charles Snodgrass to Jacob Foulk.

In Sep 1807, Jacob Foulk and his wife Margaret, sold 78 acres (adjoining Charles and William Snodgrass) to Thomas Floyd.

7 Oct 1809, Thomas and Drusillah Floyd sold 32 1/2 acres on Phraroah's Run to John Snodgrass. Part of tract conveyed to Floyd by Jacob Foulk.

29 Dec 1817, George and Elizabeth Foulk (of Trumbull, OH) sell Michael Floyd 114 1/2 acres (for $400) in Monongalia County, VA on Pharaoh's Run. "It being a part of two tracts conveyed to John Floyd and from him to the above named Elizabeth Foulk,"

And, in reiteration of the above information, another book quotes the transaction as such, "1817- 114+ acres in two tracts from George Foulk  and Elizabeth his wife to Michael Floyd, acknowledged by George with Elizabeth's dower release."

These last two statements lead me to acknowledge that Elizabeth is John's daughter. The info listed above also fills in your second John Floyd's whereabouts PA and confirms his presence along Cheat River and if his daughter was living in OH in 1818, then it's a good reason to move to that area as well.

I was just wondering if you have any knowledge about this John Floyd's family? Did he have any other children? do you know his wife's name?

All the best

As of now, I have nothing on the family of this John Floyd. I'm starting to work on his line as I believe he is likely the brother to Henry F. and Michael Floyd. I had been aware of this Elizabeth Floyd but missed that John was (or may be) her father.

Hi Daniel, I was just running through some old paperwork and didn't know if you ever got any further re: Elizabeth (Floyd) Foulk and her father John Floyd?

All the best,

Mike
