My name is Anne Shankland and I run a Shankland One-Name Group, studying and researching the family history of Shanklands, and Shanklins, everywhere. If you have Shankland or Shanklin ancestry, get in touch; we may be able to exchange information and find out more about our mutual Shankland/Shanklin interests.
You may be interested to know that Shanklands appear to have originated in the south-west of Scotland, specifically from Dumfriesshire, Ayrshire, Kirkcudbrightshire. There seems to have been a constant interchange of people between south-west Scotland and northern Ireland, but it's the Shanklin name that occurs most often in Ireland. "Shankland" is rare in Ireland; "Shanklin" is almost unknown in Scotland. There's also a substantial population of both Shanklands and Shanklins/Shanklyns in Wales. Shanklands and Shanklins in England trace their ancestry back within a very few generations to Scotland, Ireland, or Wales.
The name has also travelled overseas to Australia, South Africa, Canada, and America. In the USA the Shanklin name is much more common than the Shankland one, but DNA proves that the two names are related.

Hi Anne, here I am. It will be interesting to see what this draws in the way of unknown Shankland's. If it's great I might have to consider joining Tweeter! :)

Hello, Joy, and welcome to the Group! Yes, Naomi Selena Shanklin is a pretty name. Our chances of finding John Shanklin of Ireland are fairly slim, unfortunately, since research in Ireland is so difficult. But could you let me know more about your grandparents? What was your grandfather's name? When did they marry? When did John Shanklin arrive in Canada? Approximate dates will do if you don't have exact dates - We might find out more still!

My Grandfather married Naomi Selena Shanklin, daughter of John Shanklin of Ireland, who emigrated to Canada. He doesn't appear anywhere in Canada or Ireland that I have found except the Toronto, Ontario phone book. Unfortunately the name died out as the only son did not have children. I always loved my Grandmother's name though I didn't know her.
