re. Julia Lally, wife of Richard Pierce

After an evening on the IFHF website, pleased to report I have made some progress, as follows— 99% sure parents of Julia Lally are Thomas Lally & Mary Browne (mother was surnamed on baptismal record of son Thomas). Julia was baptized 12 May 1839 at the St. Nicholas combined N&E, as were her children. (She appears to have shaved a few years off later during the 1901 census.)

Siblings include:
Thomas Lally (1836 – )
Maria Lally (1841 – )
Patt Joseph Lally (1843 – )
John Martin Lally (1845 – )

Also have likely ID'd 4 of Thomas Lally's siblings from baptismal records of his children (they were sponsors), and suspect that his parents were Thomas Lally & Ann Sullivan, although I need further evidence to substantiate.

Any thoughts?

Hi All,

My name is Don, and I’m from a NYC branch of the Pierce’s. Some of you here appear to share in common with me the ancestors Julia Lally & Richard Pierce of Galway. Only yesterday did I have that aha! moment and realize I have been following the wrong trail for years, based on documents prepared years ago by the Irish Government. Wrongly, I had placed greater faith in these bureaucratic docs from the 1970s than in the family tree as it came down from my own grandmother.

Once the pieces started to fall together, it all became perfectly obvious. In fact, I fondly recall the little candy store on 32 Bowling Green Lane, where my Aunts Fannie & Kitty lived (Frances & Kate). They were old and dear friends still of my own grandmother who had resided there for a few years in the first decade of the last century with her Uncle Thomas and his brood. I revisited just a few years back to see the old building had been torn down (and the privy out back) to make way for a shiny new luxury condo. By odd coincidence, a colleague of mine happened to live there, which I only discovered when I was invited to her soiree on the site.

So last night, I could not help encountering the breadcrumbs of Maureen Shepherd’s search over the years. And, I am wondering, have you all located any further info regarding the origins of Richard & Julia?

I am fairly well versed in the methods of discovery, but haven't access to any records now in person (although I will soon be visiting from New York my brother who lives in Dublin), but it seems a needless waste of time, if you are already in full possession of the facts.

I have come upon an interesting document myself just now that I have relative confidence pertains to Richard Sr. How many tailors can there be from Galway named Richard Pierce?... It shows that shortly before marrying Julia, he journeyed by ship to New York. Clearly, he subsequently returned, but I am wondering if it is not possible that he found his Julia there?

Yours sincerely,

Don Carroll

I have just taken over my mother's genealogy research, my maiden name is Peirce,

according to her research she has gone about 9 generations back from my father on the Peirce's, that takes us to Cork Co., Ireland, about 1615, but I do have some missing info on exact dates, spouses, etc. any help would be appreciated.
