Okay, My great great grandfather Michiell Oliver Laughlin is driving me crazy. This is what I know

The Michiell could be his given name but I don't know if he had a nickname of Mike or Mitch or something. I am not sure what Michiell is short for in Irish. NOTE: On his wife's death certificate it says husband's name was Micheal. On his son George's death certificate, father is listed as Mack Laughlin.

I have no birth date. He died before the 1900 census in Missouri according to the cenus as his wife is listed as a widow. I have heard that he might have just left. My great grandmother was just a child but over the years I heard this from others that he might have just taken off.

According to a record of one of his son's census, he was born in Northern Ireland. All other records of the children say Ireland.

So I am curious to see if he might be a Laughlin, McLauglin, MacLaughlin, O Laughlin.. yikes.

He married Amelia Ellen Riley according to her obituary on 2 June 1880. She is on the 1880 census with her parents William Wyckoff Riley and Mary Ann Sharp Riley as single on the census that was enumerated on 16 Jun 1880. They were in Bogart, Carroll, Missouri.

Mitchell Oliver Laughlin and Ellen were the parents of six.

I have found a death of a Mike Laughlin listed as single who died in 1919 of Alcoholism, no known parents.. born in Ireland ..
born March 10, 1854. If he married in 1880, he would have been 26. if he did indeed leave the family then this could be him.

What do you think?
I can only find Carroll County Marriages to 1856. I need 1880

I am assuming the marriage might be wrong if she was still single with her parents on 16 June and the Marriage was supposed to be 2 Jun.

I remember my great grandmother saying Ellen raised the kids by herself and Daisy was only two. So that puts Mike or Mack leaving about 1900 and he is not on the census...

Why do I have a feeling this guy that died of alcoholism is him?

WOW Gene... wow wow wow

I am blown away at your work.... I have found a nephew of my great grandmother, the daughter of Mike Laughlin. He is in his late 80's and I am going to try to call him today... in fact right now.
He is out at a funeral.. his wife said she would have him call me.
Ellen left Mike Laughlin in late 1896 or 1897 and took the horse and wagons from the town or Bogard, Carroll, Missouri along with her six children and went south to Elkland, Webster, Missouri. The distance is about 200 miles south.
Gene I had an emergency and had to rush out of town.. I am back... I want to see if I can get a Find a Grave person to get me a photo of Mike's grave.
WOW, GJ

I got some news last night from the grandson of Mack or Mike Laughlin.

He said that Ellen Amelia Riley Laughlin was fed up with Mike and took of with the horses and wagons and six children and went to Webster county. He said the younger kids were born in Carroll county and Daisy was a baby and his father George was four. So this would put Ellen as leaving him right around late 1896 or 1897.

I told Barney, the grandson, that in the 1900 census she is listed as a widow and he said.. I am sure she wished he was dead but he wasn't. He said.. "I never asked my father more about him because he was not talked about and my father was four when Ellen left him" I told him I found a man named Mike Laughlin who died in Kansas City in 1919 from illness caused by alcoholism. He said... "from what I have heard as a child... that could be him..." I said I wonder if there is a divorce record and he said.. I highly doubt it.. Ellen just wanted to leave and get out of Carroll and head to Webster County.

He never came right out and said he was a drinker but I remember my great grandmother saying grandpa liked the bottle.. not sure if he meant her father or grandfather. Addie would have been 8 or so when Ellen took all the children.

I am going to do some research on distance.. etc..
