Job Jenkins
I'm looking for my husband's great grandfather. Job Jenkins who came from Pontlytoon, Wales around 1881 with his wife Hannah Minton Jenkins. They had two sons in Wales, Lee & John who died in a measel epidemic. Hannah was pregnant with their third child when they immigrated to America. They lived in the Allegheny City Section of Pittsburgh, PA which is now called the North Side of Pittsburgh.
She had a son in 1882 naming him Edward Garfield. The family story was that she saw President Garfield's funeral train passing through Pittsburgh, PA when she was in labor and said if her baby as a boy, she'd name him after the President. However, when I researched this, the dates do not mesh.
Later Hannah had 2 more sons, William Lee and another John. I do not have their birth dates, yet. Job & Hannah moved to Follansbee, West Virginia where Job worked in the Follansbee Steel Mill. Hannah was the cook for the executives of the company and their guests. She was well know for her cooking abilities.
Later, Job went out west to the mines, leaving his wife and children in West Virginia. I do not know which state he went to, nor the name of the mine, nor what kind of mine he worked for. Job was murdered in an ambush while bringing the payroll to the mine. I do not have the date of his murder, nor where he is buried.
Nothing is known of their son John. I have a picture of Hannah in 1932 with her grandson Alan Minton, his wife Jessie, and their oldest son, Alan Lee Jenkins. I also have her funeral bill which her grandsons, Alan & Lee paid. On the bill, it had her name as Hannah Boyd Jenkins. I haven't found out why her middle name was changed from Minton to Boyd.
So, I want to find out these things: Where Job went in the west, including the mine he worked for and the place of his death and burial; Any information about John Jenkins; and Why & when Hannah's middle name was changed from Minton to Boyd. Thanks!

It appears that Hannah remarried a Boyd, then was divorced by 1910, and she took the Jenkins name back but kept Boyd as her middle name? Hannah had 5 children, only 2 were living in 1910. -

Thanks so much Kate! I really think this is my husband's father and family. When I told him about your post, he said, "Where is the McGuffy Reader?" We have Edward Jenkins I's McGuffy Reader with "Irondale, Ohio" on the inside fly page. So, I think you are correct. Hannah had 5 children.....the 2 who died in Wales, John must have died in America, and the two living are Edward Garfield & William Lee this head of the house. I'm sure the "Emma" is probably a misspelling of Erma.!

It would appear that John and Hannah(Anna) were in Ohio at some point around the birth of William Lee? Also, I would assume that Alan is the only other child living in 1900. -

If William Lee was 16 at this 1900 census, then Edward Garfield would be older and perhaps listed under his own household.
Alan Minton was the son of William Lee and Erma Laurella. He wasn't born until 1909.
Years after William Lee died his brother Edward Garfield married Wm's widow Erma Laurella. -

I believe I found Edward Garfield in the military in 1900, I'll have to check. I did look in the all the newspaper archives i have access to with no luck on finding Job.

Are you sure that the Alan in the picture with Hannah isn't her grandson?

There are 2 Alan's in the picture, one is Hannah's grandson, Alan Minton Jenkins. The other is his son, Alan Lee Jenkins who is Hannah's Great Grandson who is about 10 years old.

Hi Andrea-
I found Job on the Pittsburgh directory in 1896, and a John Jenkins is also listed, both were laborers, so I'm assuming this was one of the Johns, of course no age is listed, and I find Job in 1897. I also found Hannah and Edward and Wm Lee living at the same address on a a couple of years. I'm trying to pinpoint when Hannah married the mysterious Mr. Boyd :) I'm going to attach the directories below. The third one was from 1901, so Job left/died between 1897-1901. - Attachments:
