James Miller is my 3rd great-grandfather. I've been researching him for over 10 years.
Here is what I know:
Name: James Miller
Born: 15 September 1814 (source: Saunders County, NE GenWeb Project, Ashland Cemetery Tombstone Records ~ "James Miller d 12 Jun 1887 72 yr 8 mo 28 days")
(note: according to Federal census records for 1850, 1860, 1870, James was born 1815-1818)
All census records I've found show James born in Ohio. According to a biographical sketch of his son, John, he was a "native of Ohio". A sketch of his son. Charles, states James was a "native of Lancaster County".
He moved to Kuskiosko County, IN , where he married Mary Baker 28 October 1838. Mary was born 28 December 1819 in Johnstown, Licking County, OH, a daughter of Jacob Baker (a native of Baker, Hardy County, VA, now WV) & Barbara Kedner.
Federal census records for James:
1850 ~ Prairie Township, Kuskiosko County, Indiana ~ James Miller. age 35 yrs., b. OH
1860 ~ Jefferson Township, Winona County, Minnesota - James Miller, age 42 yrs., b. OH
1870 ~ Appears in Ashland, Saunders County, Nebraska - James Miller, age 55 yrs., b. OH
James & Mary Miller had the following children:
John Newton, b. 1840 in IN, d. 1924 in NE (m. Mary LaBare)
Enoch, b. 1843 in IN, d. 1859 in IN
Charles, b. 1847 in IN, d. 1922 in CA (m. Hattie Colbert, m. Mrs. Carrie Martin)
Elijah, b. 1849 in IN, d. 1859 in IN
Jemima A. (Minnie), b. 1852 in IN, d. 1932 in NE (m. Samuel Merriman)
Mary, b. 1855 in IN, d. 1932 in CA (m. George Herron, m. Jeptha Turner)
Ruhama (Ella), b. 1858 in IN, d. 1941 in IA (m. Levi Burch)
Olive (Etta), b. 1961 in MN, d. 1894 in KS (m. Will Rouse)
Tena Matilda, b. 1864 in MN, d. 1924 in IA (m. Leonard Farmer)
I haven't been able to find a record to verify James' date of birth. I would like to know if I have the date right, if he was actually born in Ohio (possibly Lancaster, Fairfield County, OH) or if he was born somewhere else (like Lancaster County, PA or Lancaster County, VA) & moved to Ohio very young, who his parents were & where his ancestors were from.
Thanks in advance for any help, leads, etc.
