Harry Reed Stiles was my great-grandfather. The family belief has always been that he was adopted.

I found the following info:

1870 census Blackwoodtown, New Jersey
Reed, Henry 41 NJ
Sarah 40 NJ
Stiles, Susan 34 NJ servant
Henry infant NJ

1880 census Deptford, New Jersey
Reed, Henry 52 NJ
Sarah E 51 NJ
Harry (son) 10 NJ
Barker, Irene niece 6 NJ

1900 census Mantua, New Jersey
Reed, Harry Jan 1871 NJ
Sarah E mother Aug 1829 NJ

I can't find Harry's mother, Susan anywhere else except the 1870 census. I don't know if Stiles is her married name or maiden name.

why does Harry use the last name of Reed in 1900? He used Stiles when he married.

I suspect that perhaps Susan was either Sarah or Henry's sister ..... just a hunch ..... but I haven't found any more clues and I still don't know if Susan was even married.

Deptford is in Gloucester county and is a township
I live in Mantua and my mother and grandfather were born and raised here. We haven't gone far. LOL

I forget the exact facts behind this, but the border between Camden and Gloucester Counties changed several times. The border happens to be in Deptford Twp (on the Gloucester Co side) but the township is quite large. That said, Blackwoodtown would have been on just the other side of a creek (which caused much of the boundary changes), in Camden County. The assumption there would be that the Reeds merely moved across the creek. However, in earlier years they lived in Woodbury (which is further away and next to Mantua) and later they lived in Mantua, itself.

My grandfather was under the assumption that his father was born in Washington DC. I have seen other sources that say Pennsylvania (prob Philadelphia). The census, though, clearly states he was born here.
Not that I know of. I've looked at the book several times over the years. However, since I can't find Harry's parents, it would be difficult to know that.
I once belonged to Stiles Family of America (or something like that). Although they had extensive information, they were not able to connect me to anyone.
I hate to admit it, Gene, but I have been a very naughty researcher. There are lots of resources I have never used. Deeds would be one of those. Before having a computer, I did most research by ordering documents but back then they were cheap and you didn't have to jump through hoops to prove you are who you say you are. Since then I've relied mostly on census records and whatever documents I can find online. I guess in that respect I've been very lucky.
As far as being the one to solve the Stiles mystery, I don't know about that. I am tired and recently I think more about just publishing and being done with it. (as if....) Sites like this one sort of rekindle my interest for a while. I am hoping this site is different enough to bring me some new data. Then maybe I'll find the drive to really dig in again.
Also, Harry is an elusive fellow. I cannot find his wife at all and all I have to go on is what my grandmother told me and a couple census records. (and she did not like her mother-in-law very much)
