My great grandfather was Fleming Mays, born 1 August 1814 in Rockingham Co., NC, died between 1895 and 1897 in Washington Co., VA. He married first to mary Wilson on 8 Nov 1848 in Paperville, Sullivan Co., Tennessee. They had five known children. He married second to Deborah Denton (my great grandmother), on 8 August 1861 in Washington Co., VA. Her first husband was Newton Richardson. Fleming and Deborah had four known children. Fleming married third to Mary Elizabeth Blevins, 7 March 1882 in Washington Co., Va, two possible children.

Fleming Mays was the son of Champion Mays (also shown as Champness Mays) who was born about 1777 in Virginia and lived in Pittsylvania Co., VA prior to moving to Rockingham Co., NC. He died Jan-March 1863 in Washington Co., VA. Champion most likely married first in about 1810, wife's name unknown by whom he had Fleming, Amelia "Milly" and possibly Larkin. He married second to Nancy Bateman and had Mary Ann "Polly", female child, Thomas T., James and Joseph R.

It's great to hear from you. I do remember our correspondence. I wish that you could have found the Mays graves. I have no photographs of John, Rebecca, Fleming or Champion. How I wish that I did. I doubt any were taken of Champion given the time period in which he lived. However, Fleming lived well into the time period they would have been taking photographs. I keep looking!
