I am a direct decendent of Roswell Mason (gggGrandfather) he was born Fort Ann Washington New York. Birth seems confusing, according to some documents he was born 1820, or 1805 (recorded on his wifes genealogy family Hannah St. John) then around 1814. Civil War records say 1820. I am unable to find who his parents were. He married in Weathersfield Trumbell county Ohio Dec 1837, moved to Wisconsin, Enlisted into army from  WI.May have been living in Hubbard Wisconsin at the time.  He died from his wounds in the CW in New Orleans Jan 8 1864. Can anyone help me find who his parents were? Thank you

I found the date for 1805 to be 1801 both in the St.Johns family bible and the 1850 census. Which do I believe the Military records or the bible and the 1850 census.....Does anyone have any information on my ggggrandfather or hints on how to find the information about his birth?

Thanks Mari

Hi, I just joined the group since I am searching for the Mason family from Ft.Ann Washington who migrated to Ohio and points West.  Finally someone posted about my ggggrandmother Laura Gillette's parents.  I knew they'd migrated from New York state to midwest, but have been searching for them since 2002.

I found Masons in family groups in Rehoboth. and Swansea, Mass.  Most of their surnames were either Mason or Wood, and then several Mason  families moved to Ft.Ann Washington, NY or Berskshire, Co. Mass, and many continued to Ohio, including my ancestor's parents, Asahel Gillette and Olive Mason.  I found Olive Mason Gillette's birth parents in Mass. but haven't tracked Asahel Gillette's whose family might have been from Ft.Ann Washington.   Olive's parents were Nathan Mason and Rhoda Wood, daughter of Nathan Wood and Rhoda Mason.  Confusing, isn't it?  I can't find a trace of Asahel Gillette anywhere, NY., Mass. or Ohio.  At least I am several generations back on the Mason/Wood families, but still searching for Gillette side.   Laura Davis in Mass.

Yesterday I did more searching for Asahel Gillett,  born March 29, 1785, in Hartford, Ct.,  married to Olive Mason, and believe I have the correct one now.   Joab Gilett and Sarah Adams were his parents, and Asahel Gillett did migrate to Fairfield, Ohio where he died March 29, 1838, and it's only taken me ten years plus to find this father of my ggggrandmother, Laura Gillett.  LD

Laura, Im convinced we are in the same Mason group. I have Nathan in Andover Ashtabula Ohio living with his son Calvin. Try the 1840-1850 Census. Nathan is also listed on the Revolutionary War Pension records. Olive was also in Andover.

Hi, I'm more in a muddle now and stuck on the father of Asahel Gillett born 1789 Ct. to Olive Mason born 1789 Ny died 1852 in Astabula, Ohio. Problem: only father I can find for Asahel is Samuel Gillett, born 1759 Ct. died 1845 NY. married Tabitha Seward(. I can't find any confirmation for Samuel Gillett and wife Tabitha Seward.)  Previously today I had been looking over a Nathaniel Gillette who arrived with that famous fleet into Mass Bay, then took Freeman's Oath by May 1634, but later moved to Conn. village near Indian territory. There was a Asahel Gillette in that village.  Oh, another choice was Asahel Gillet. born 3/21/1784 in Hartford, Ct. died in Fairfield, Butler, Ohio.--no wife listed.

Also, Olive Mason is back with the Swansea, Mass. Masons. with a father named Nathan Mason (nearly all the Masons are named Nathan except for earliest Sampson Mason.).So, Mari, I have to leave for my other son's house for a week in order for my young grandson to attend "Leggo Camp", and can't use the computer there and will leave the woes of the Gillettes and Masons behind.  Can I check with you again then, as you seem further ahead.?  Laura
