Hi Bill,
Thank you for bringing your African American Drayton research to the group and welcome! Isn't it wonderful to have a social networking site like GenealogyWise, dedicated entirely to genealogy? I hope your Drayton Fellowship research flourishes here!

Best,

Hello Bill!

My name is Alane Roundtree and my research of the Silver Bluff Slave Community in Barnwell, Edgefield and Aiken Counties includes persons with the surname DRAYTON in Hammond, Sleepy Hollow, Millbrook, and Gregg Townships in Aiken County post-emancipation.

Reverend Granderson DRAYTON was the first pastor of Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson, South Carolina. This church was founded by freedmen and women who were enslaved at Silver Bluff, Cathwood, Cowden and Redcliffe Plantations. Although Mount Pleasant recognizes a formal organization date of 1870, ordination records for Reverend Granderson Drayton from Silver Bluff Baptist Church show he was ordained into the ministry in 1868 and may have been installed as pastor at Mount Pleasant as early as December 1868. This further suggests that Mount Pleasant may have been founded, though not formally organized, as early as 1866, immediately after emancipation. (1)

Reverend Granderson DRAYTON was born about 1833 in South Carolina and died on 01 Dec 1910 in Aiken County, South Carolina at about age 77. He was buried in Zion Fair Baptist Church Cemetery, Aiken County, South Carolina. The original burial site is no longer extant since the church and cemetery was relocated after the Savannah River Plant necessitated the removal of the town of Ellenton in 1951. The entire cemetery was relocated to the new Zion Fair Cemetery near New Ellenton, South Carolina. (2)

In addition to Mount Pleasant, Reverend Drayton was also called as the first pastor of Zion Fair Baptist Church in 1871 and served there for thirty-nine years until his death. (3)

Census records for Granderson Drayton from 1880 until his death in 1910 consistently record his assertion that his father's birthplace was AFRICA. (4)

I have been trying to establish Granderson Drayton's relationship, if any, with other DRAYTON families in the area, including Spencer DRAYTON, Frank DRAYTON and William DRAYTON among others.

I would love to correspond with you further regarding these DRAYTON families and any connection their families may have had to Drayton Hall.

With All Good Wishes,

Alane Roundtree

1. See the History of Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, Jackson, South Carolina, 126th Church Anniversary Program, August 4th, 1996; Dr. H.T. Scruggs, Pastor, Pg. 1: "The Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church was organized in 1870 with thirty-two members under a brush arbor. After being duly organized, the church called its first pastor, Reverend Granderson Drayton, more affectionately known as "Father Drayton." The church grew stronger and stronger spritually and members were added during his pastorate. He served the church faithfully as pastor for forty-two (42) years and was removed by death in 1910. During the pastorate of Reverend Granderson Drayton and Reverend J.M. Stephens (1870-1944) twelve (12) deacons were ordained (not in this order): Audrey Coleman, Frank Drayton, Fred Johnson, Hayward Johnson, Henry Newman, Sr., Alec Preston, Charlie Preston, Tom Rhodes, Nicholas Roundtree, Parish S. Roundtree, Ben Seigler, Jackson "Stonewall" Wilson and three ministers were licensed; Mr. Jones; Mr. Kit Newman and Deacon Parish Samuel Roundtree.

2. Reverend Drayton's birth date estimated from the 1870 US Census Record. Granderson Drayton Household, Gregg Township, Edgefield County, South Carolina, Dwelling 375; Family 400; Drayton, Granderson, age 37, male, black, born SC, farm laborer. In regard to Zion Fair Cemetery according to "This cemetery consisted of two hundred thirty-eight (238) graves and was an active cemetery which had been maintained. There were a large number of monuments and several brick vaults which were replaced in the same condition as found. Description of Grave #1. Rev. Granderson Drayton; DOD: 12-1-1910; Marble Head; Brick Tomb Foot." The Savannah River Site Research Project should have additional infomation on the removal of the original Zion Fair cemetery.

Bruce Wright, Pgs. 8-9, from the history compiled by members of the Zion Fair History Committee in 1990, credits Pg 11.
