Comment by Tracy Neely on March 7, 2012 at 7:49am Hi! I My ancestors from Mobile, Alabama with the following surnames have Louisiana connections: LaFargue, Rabby, Neely, Daffron, Hines. However, I a specific interest in Arabi, Louisiana. My great great grandfather's brother, Jefferson Davis Neely, ran an abattoir in Arabi after the turn of the 20th century. I am wondering if he chose this place because his mother's last name was Hernandez. While everything indicates Frances Hernandez was born in Alabama about 1823, the 1880 census also states that her father was from Italy. I am wondering if that is not a mistake as I have not been able to corroborate this and there is a huge population of Canary Island people in St. Bernard Parish, the parish where Arabi is located. Also, while I am not an expert, I don't usually associate the surname Hernandez with Italy. I would be more inclined to associate it with Spain. Does anyone have any suggestions or food for thought on this matter?
