Example of an early CDV with square corners which have been cut to fit into a photo album.
This image of a woman and child was taken during the Civil War. Note the mother's hair parted in the middle and pulled back covering her ears. Her dress has dropped shoulders and flared sleeves.

At her neck is a photograph of a man, possibly a soldier, and most likely her husband. It is very possible that her husband has died and this is a piece of jewellery by which to remember him.
