The Genealogy & Family History Social Network

I just bought Legacy 7 Deluxe. I am just beginning to do my family genealogy. So, I don't want to enter in a lot of sources and then have to go back later and "fix" them. I understand how to create master sources and then cite them later. I'm wondering what is the best way to name your master sources. For instance, a census. Should I name it 1920 US Federal Census? Or should I start with the state, county, city, 1920 US Federal Census? A different way? I'd like to be consistent so I can find a master source fairly easily. Does anybody have a system that has worked well for them? Thanks.

Share - I wrote about how I organize my master source list at http://legacynews.typepad.com/legacy_news/2005/12/legacy_tip_orga.html. It's good to hear you're investigating this at the beginning of your research. Read the article if you have a few minutes and let me know if you have any questions.
Hi Geoff: Great idea this forum. I am a relative new user and researcher. Legacy was recommended to my by Rick Roberts of Global Genealogy, and I think the program is fantastic.
By the way there were "script" problems when accessing this site.
Good Luck to us all in our mutual endeavours.

The article and CD are great resources. Each person must ponder and think how to best make the master list for personal use.
My personal choice is:
Source list name
Census, federal, 1850 Lockport, Will County, Illinois
type:
census/tax
citation:
1850 U.S. census, Lockport Township Will County, Illinois, population schedule, town of Lockport. Micropublication M432, roll 133. Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration.

source list:
document, birth certificate, Will County, Illinois
citation:
Will County Births, County Clerk's Office, Joliet, Will County, Illinois.

For me, to name by location is too confusing as to where I received a particular item. In the master source list, the type of item is my main concern.
