Where'd they go? My people left Lithuania and went to: SCOTLAND/ENGLAND/IRELAND

The recent influx of Lithuanians to Scotland and the UK wasn't the first wave! In the late 1800s/early 1900s, Lithuanians made their way to (mainly) Glasgow in Scotland and (mainly) Middlesbrough in Yorkshire, UK. Here's the place to discuss/ask/reach out regarding your Lithuanian ancestors in Scotland and the UK.

I came across a really interesting message thread on Ancestry about Lithuanians in Scotland, especially their involuntary exodus from the British Isles. I've posted it above.
I've had great luck with the various government vital records sites in the UK, these include:

Unfortunately, they use a token system for most of these. You pay about $20.00 and then you can do a certain number of queries. I have been able to find several relatives with this approach.
I have seen that thread Rich, It is very interesting.

As I am finding my ancestors/relative's passenger lists I am seeing Scotland over and over. The first time was a real shock. I'll never forget my Aunt Jean saying, (with emphasis and very good facial expressions)- "Why the H___l would they be in Scotland?" - lol.

They came to America in the late 1800's early 1900s before all that business in 1917. Althoguh word is that my grandfather didn't like being a Cossack. I looked up the Shotts, Scotland that was listed and there was a LOT of coal mining there. (All my male relatives in the US back then seemed to be coal miners)

I keep wondering how they would have known to go there and how they would have gotten there. I have been speculating that they went into Poland & then took a ship?
Joan,
The route to Scotland usually left from Hamburg, if memory serves. A lot of times, they didn't have the money to go all the way to the USA, but still needed to get out of Lithuania. So the trip to Scotland or England was shorter and cheaper. Often, they worked in the mines there for several months to earn enough money to continue their journey on to the USA.
Richie, some Lithuanians landed near Dundee, Scotland. One of the stories in our family is that the ship dumped them in Scotland, telling them they were in the U.S. There were recruiters from Scotland who went to Lithuania to recruit workers for the Lanarkshire mines. My grandfathers and a couple of uncles ended up there.

My parents and my brother and I were born in Scotland. All my grandparents were born in Lithuania/Poland, right near the border in Marjiampole and/or Suvalki.
