Lingea
I'm hoping someone can tell me if the surname "Lingea" has any French-Canadian connections. I've learned that my 4th great grandfather was Canadian, but know little else about his origins. His name was Lewis or possibly Louis Lingea and he was born about 1825 somewhere in Canada. My 1st record of him is the 1850 US Federal Census when he is living in Hardin, Calhoun County in western IL. Many of his neighbors are listed as being of Canadian origin. Though born in Canada, his mother Catherine is listed as having been born in Vermont.
I've searched for the origins of the name "Lingea" but have turned up short and am not even positive on the pronunciation of the name. I have some evidence that his daughter went by an Anglicized version of "Laney" and I suspect that some others of this surname went by the surname "Lingo".
There is some family lore that Lewis's daughter Sarah Jane was partially of Native American descent. A recent mitochondrial DNA test seems to suggest that Sarah's mother was of European descent, so its possible that her father Lewis may have had some native ancestry himself.
Any insight into the origins of this name or the presence of any Lingea's in Canada would be a great help.

I should also add that in searches on Ancestry.com I could find only one other family with this name, and they too are descended from Lewis. Searches for Lingea also tend to turn up the names "Lange" or "Langway".

At this point one of the closest names that I see would be (De) LANGEAC. You need to get his parents (with mother's maiden name) in Quebec, then it becomes easy. Do you have Louis/Lewis' death certificate and obit, and possibly a will. Try and find out if he had siblings.

I don't have an obit yet. I don't know exactly when he died, only that it was sometime after 1880, when he was living in Madrid Falls, Fulton County, Kentucky.
I know that his mother was listed as Catherine Falls (she lived with Lewis and his 2nd wife in her later years). I don't know if Falls was her maiden name, or that of a deceased 2nd husband. I have no idea if Catherine married Lewis's father in Canada or Vermont, or somewhere else, but I know there is a Vermont French Canadian genealogical society so my guess is that there was a measureable French-Canadian community somewhere in Vermont and that may have been where the two met.
I don't know the name of Lewis's father. If he followed naming conventions of the day, theres a good chance his father's name was Francis. That's what Lewis named his first born son. His daughter Sarah named her fist born Lewis, after her father, so maybe he did the same. If thats true than I'd be looking for a Francis Lingea , Langway, Langevin, or Langeac married to a Catherine Falls or possilby Foiles? That's assuming that Falls wasn't the name of a 2nd husband of course, but I've read that in those days widows sometimes reverted back to their maiden names.
