I am in need of some help!  I have been researching my GGG grandparents Carl Johan Carlson and Anna Karina Bjorgum for several years now.  I have been able to find information on my grandmother from Norway, but have struggled with tracing my grandfather from Sweden. Every record I have or find for him seems to have a different date or place!

I was able to come across a marriage record for them from the Norway Digital Archives in the Church books of St. Jorgens hospital parish 1897-1886.  This record listed Carl's birthplace as "Flaskum i Elfsborg Lehn".  I also found an emigration record from Bergen 1874-1930 listing his birthplace as "Elfsborgs Laen i Sverige".  I've tried to find this place on a map, and the closest thing that I could find was "Alvsborg, Sweden."  So, I joined this group in the hopes that someone could maybe help me know where this place is?  Was there a mistake in the spelling by the clerks and "Alvsborg" is the correct spelling or is there a place called "Elfsborg" in Sweden?  (I apologize that I don't know how to write with the Swedish alphabet!)

I am looking for a Carl Johan Carlson who was born in Sweden.  I've found two records with his birthplace listed as Elfsborg and I have a personal narrative from their daughter that says he was born in Stockholm, Sweden.  His birthdate is listed as approx. 1853-55.  I have one record listing a his father as Carl Andersen. (I know patronymics was used in Sweden, which makes it harder for me to trace because of my lack of understanding!)   He was listed as an "Arbeider" on his emigration record and a stone mason in the family narrative.  At some point he traveled to Norway and met my GGG grandmother. (When I look at a map of Sweden, I think that traveling to Bjorgan, Norway would have been more likely from Alvsborg than Stockholm, another reason I joined this group.)  He married Anna Karina Andersdatter in 1884 in Bergen, Norway and traveled to the United States in 1887 from Bergen.

If anyone could help me with ANY bit of information to fill in my lack of knowledge, I would sincerely appreciate it!

Thanks!

My great grandfather Alfred, born 17 Mar. 1866, moved to Landa Parish, Alvsborg in 1868  From there he moved to Eggvena for sometime.  Before immigrating in 1882 the whole family (Johansson) moved back to Landa Parish, Alvsborg.  My great grandparents Johan Johansson and Johanna Johansdotter (Skovde, Skaraborg) immigrated first.  I have more information on this family and the tree back to about the 1700's.  And, I am still learning as much as I can about this complex family tree so looking for relatives and more information.

Leslie - Orby is parish (as well as a town). It's proper spelling is Örby, Älvsborgs. The umlauts above the O and A place them at the end of the alphabet, after Z. So when searching things keep this in mind. The other part such as "Haby Skattegarden" is a location within the parish (or town if you prefer). I have some ancestors that actually lived there. If you would like you can send me questions at jtischer@cableone.net and I will try to help.

I read through the Hans Hogmans site and still have some problems. The Parishes I think I have do not seem to show up anywhere: Brattingstorp Alvsborgs, Bollareslatt Orby, Haby Skattegarden Orby, Ekedalen Orby, Johannisberg Orby and Bosgarden Orby.
And I can't tell if Orby is a parish or a county (lan).
These records go back to the late 1700's through 1929.

Leslie - you should read Hans Högman's website. There you find a lot of information about genealogy in Sweden and how the jurisdiction districts works here, churcbooks, soldiersystem and so on. Maybe it became clearer how to do genealogy here.

Do you know from which parish your relative came from? Älvsborg is a really big county.

Your county and ours don't working similar when it cames to genealogy. Here in Sweden it's the parish which counts. It's great that you know the county as then you know in which part of Sweden to look into, as sometimes there is parishes with the same name in other parts of Swel.

So to your question, did this Anders Henrik emigrated? Did he lived in Sweden 1890?

If you like to do research by yourself in swedish churchbooks it better to use Genline I think. This as they have a site in english as well and a research-client in english http://www.genline.com.

I have just started to really dig into my Swedish family history. And I'm so confused and almost ready to give up. I did find that one relative is from Alvsborgs county. Anyone have information on:
Anders Henrik Carlsson (or Karlsson)? Born March 2, 1862. Married twice, second wife was Emma Justina Johansdotter.
I tried searching with SVAR, but unless you have a translator right there it makes no sense to me. Any tips would be great!
