Maybe she ran away and not actually died at the time. If she did die at this time it is possible she is burried at Vic Market as they seemed to be in Melbourne itself. There seems to be a bit of a gap with deaths in Melbourne at that time. Is there anything on the marriage certificate of James and Emily, I know some I have, have the date of the death of a partner but they dont quite go back that far. I had a look, cannot find an inquest either but I would guess she possibly died whent the youngest was born or even had another child that was still born so not registered.
tried the newspapers but nothing there either.
registrations were at that time registrations were still with NSW but I tried that one too.

Thanks I had thought about her dying, but having no record of a death or burial is a bit of a pain. You've gone to a lot of trouble, so thank you very much. If I ever find out where she is I'm going to go and have a talk to her about leaving a trail in her next life, lol..

I have just been to a talk where one of the researchers from Vic BDM was talking. Of course registration did not start in victoria until 1853 before that it was all church records. They are currently working on a project where they are collecting a lot of church records not previously recorded in the Pioneer Indexes. Many of the Churches did not send in books etc. They are also working on a Huge Cemetery Index. She has no idea at this stage when these records will be released but of course they involve the time period you are looking for. so do not give up all hope, there is a glimmer of light but not sure when it will shine on your query.

Thanks Carmel, that's brilliant news isn't it? You know in 20 years Genealogy hunting has become SO much easier, it's amazing to think what it'll be like in another 20. Thanks again, Jo.
