Do you know if he fought in the Civil War? If he fought for the Union there may be a pension file? I checked the Texas Confederacy Pension site, and did not find him there. I saw his death record on FamilySearch Labs, it indicates he was born in Illinois, but everything else I find indicates Indiana.
I do not know if he fought in the Civil War or not.

All of the census states that he was born in Indiana. His obit states "Deceased was born in Illinois, moving with his family to Indiana when three years of age. At the age of seventeen years he came to Texas with his parents, settling at Lucas, where he resided until about ten years ago, when he moved to McKinney." His obit does not have any information about his parents or any sibliing.
If his family moved when he was 3, its possible they missed being on either the IL or the IN census in 1850?
Possibly, I have never been able to find him in the 1850 census?
