I want to thank all for your information. I have been able to add 22 new people on the Bostick family tree.

I will check out my paperwork and let you know.  The work I have in an ongoing, private collection of every Bostic in the US.  I think the first in SC was John in circa 1793.  He was living near Columbia - Congaree. I love to read about SC and especially the area around the Congaree! A lot of run away slaves lived on the islands but I don't think those islands exist today?  I will have to ask.  I don't see them on any present day map.

I discovered the 5 in a book I found in a Mormon genealogical library in Mesa AZ. That was pre internet. It was free blacks in the South Carolina a compilation of the 1850 census.

I have a list of all the possible Bostics in that area and will check it again. I think money is KEY!  They were given land and Susan was given a home.

I wish I knew more about Judah!  This name must have been passed down orally!  Fascinating!

One conundrum for me is if James was the father of the 5. What happened to him? Who was his wife?

From what my aunt said the very first John fathered James with his slave Juda. She was also manumitted along with James according to her.

Anything is possible but I do think John the Bachelor is a pretty strong case. By process of elimination, I can't imagine who else it would be?  He had to have the land he gave to your Bostic planters and if he gave Susan the house in Columbia, he had to have the money to purchase it. Good that you are being careful and checking everything out!

Kenneth/Judith: Kenneth - based on the 1850 Census, I think your great-great-grandfather (John) and my great-great-grandfather (Joel) were brothers. Trying to figure out how that ties into Susan Bostick and the 1800 Manumission info that Judith sent on James Bostick. How can we bridge the gap from 1800-1850.

I'm not sure Judith. But I do want to conclusively prove or disprove I'm following the correct family line.

I thought you would want to do the DNA testing on the John Bostic line in order to prove the paternity of James?  Is this possible?
