I am searching the following surnames: Hawkins, Kelly, Looper, Tidmore, Phillips from 1826 to 1890 primarily. Most moved to TX in the 1870's. Need help with the parents of Elisha Hawkins b. abt 1800 SC, d. between 1850-1860 probably in AL. He married Elizabeth Guthrie and came to AL about 1840-1850. Elisha's daughter m. Samuel S. Kelly/ey 1850 Benton/Calhoun Co., AL. Samuel Kelly was in the CSA, d. 1872 and buried Ball Play, Etowah Co., AL. His parents and Elisha Hawkin's parents are my brick wall.

Any suggestions appreciated. I live in S. TX and can't travel there to research.

Write or call to the courthouse in Benton Co and Calhoun Co and request whatever record you need (birth, marriage, death, deeds, probate court records, etc). The clerk's are usually very helpful. You can find courthouse addresses and phone nos online and in The Source and The Handybook for Genealogists.

I also live in So Texas but, I did this in St Clair Co AL and got help. Then, I was fortunate enough to be able to vacation to St Clair Co and uncovered so much stuff about my KELLY ancestors. St Clair Co has a historian who works at the courthouse and she was very helpful when I was there.
Hi, ARD,
I am new to researching in Alabama. I recently discovered that my great grandfather Alexander "Alex' MIDDLEBROOKS had a son, also named Alexander MIDDLEBROOKS, who moved to Alabama, and lived in St. Clair Co. Alex was born 15 Oct 1888 in Woodbury, Meriwether, GA, and died 25 Dec 1944 in Jefferson, AL. He apparently worked in coal mining for a company- Alabama Coal & Iron. On the 1920 census he is listed as single and living in "Margaret Mining Group No. 1" in Odenville, St. Clair, AL; by 1930 he was in Jefferson, AL and married to Mallie/Mollie; (I have no surname for her). If you reresearching MIDDLEBROOKS in GA or AL I'd love to hear from you. Also, I'd also appreciate any tips for researching in Alabama.

Thanks,
Sandra Taliaferro
