Hello Patty,

I believe that Deyo is probably always a name of Huguenot origin. The Huguenots were persecuted in France, so they went to other countries. A man named Deyo in Minneapolis told me, years ago, that the name comes from a heraldic motto, "Lascivite dejeaux," which means "Love riches." I think that probably has a religous meaning, but I'm not sure.

Thank you.I find that meaning of Deyo interesting. When searching in for my ggrandfather,Eli Deyo I found him in VT marriage record listed as Hiliare Dion..in the church record..His father Joseph was also listed as Dion on his church records in Quebec(ST Jean)..The french had many names ..They used their Mothers last names also..Confussing...Finding it hard to locate more info on them in Canada before 1850..thanks again
