For those researching ancestors in the state of Missouri
  • Cindy Johnston Sorley

My Missouri line is mostly in Laclede County
I have Laughlin's, Clarks, McAvoy, Pings,
  • Toni A. Groves

The earliest 'rumor' I have of my Payne ancestors is when they moved from Roanoke Cty, Virginia to Chariton County, Missouri in the 1830's. James F. PAYNE is my ancestor, he would have been a baby for this trip. There is no indication of his parents or siblings on any records I have. He married Margaret Rebecca LOCK(E) who moved to Chariton Cty, MO from Kentucky. Of their children, Benjamin Stout PAYNE m Mrs. M. E. Ball in 1891, their only child was Benjamin Franklin PAYNE and M. E. Ball (I believe nee Friend, altho there appears to be a McCoy somewhere in her history as well as a Ball) died in the early to mid 1990's. Benjamin Franklin PAYNE m Docia E. HASTON in 1912. So far having the most problems with finding M. E. Ball's family, and anyone prior to James Francis Payne. I do have a picture of my grandfather, Benjamin Franklin PAYNE with his cousin, James FRIEND (or so it says on the back). Anyone who needs any information on any of these people, or who has information, please let me know.

  • Ardith Jane Land Burnett

My grandfather, John Crittenden Land, my grandmother, Tennessee Brock Land and my great grandparents, Hester and Lucinda Baker Land, came to Green Couonty in 1880 from Tennessee. My father was born in Ash Grove in 1900. Some of the family passed through Mo and we nt on tto Texas. One group went to Colorado. We have the Y DNA on the FT DNA project. Lucinda Baker Land was part of the Pamunkey Baker line descended from Dorthy Davenport and Thomas Baker.

I am also innterested in the Burnett family, May Gardner Burnett especially, his line up and down. He is my daughter's great grandfather. I have quite a bit on this line, but it ends with his sons. There was only one grandson who survived to have children and his were all girls. His grandchildren all have Burnett in their names, but it is not their surname.
Angus, Arlie Sarah and Robert were his children. Robert is the only one who could still be alive. Arlie Jr is 84 this month.
  • Susan Adamson Fritz

I am researching the ADAMSON families in Texas and Phelps counties. Allen and Elizabeth Sanders Adamson had 12 known children, when Elizabeth died in about 1858 and the children were split up among relatives. I am trying to find more information on the following 2 articles:

from The Houston Herald, Texas County, MO, July 11, 2002, page 8:

from Mildred Melton's Scrapbook for the year 1879:
    "August 8, 1879
Prosecuting Attorney Geiger, Dr. BF Morgan, Jackson Davis, CM Hill and Beauregard Ross went to the Hamilton neighborhood up the river to disinter the body of a young man named Adamson who committed suicide on account of troubles with his wife. Foul play is now suspected."

1880 Mortality Schedule of Texas County MO:
    Edward Adamson 25 b. MO laborer d. August 1879 of suicide shot in Cass Township;

from December 18, 1880 The Rolla New Era newspaper, p.3:
    Norman Items
    December 16, 1880
"There was a serious accident at the Smith bank, on Friday, Dec.10, resulting in the death of Isaac Adamson. (This is the same gentleman I wrote about a year ago that got his leg broken in the Clinton iron bank.) It seems that the men were at work making a tunnel under a large bank of flint, and Mr. Adamson and Wm. Tripp, digging out the ore and Mr. Adamson shoveling it back, when the embankment gave way, over their heads and came down with a mighty crash, crushing Mr. Adamson down and covering him up to the depth of four feet. Mr. Trip escaped unharmed. Mr. Adamson was crushed and mangled up horrible. He leaves a wife and a large family of little children to mourn his loss. Some one proposed to have an inquest held over Mr. Adamson, but ye correspondent understand the boss, (Mr. Campbell) would not submit to it. I think such a case of that kind should be attended too. I think the company wants to keep out of paying anything, but charity says they must pay his widow what her husband was worth to her; for when a company will put men in such a dangerous place to work and when one of them gets killed they ought to be made to take care of the widow and orphans. Mrs. Adamson has nothing; she is a sickly woman, and has a host of little children to take care of. The good people in the surrounding country will probably lend a helping hand."

I have been unable to learn what became of these families.

Edward Adamson married Martha Eldrige in 1875 in Texas County; I have been unable to learn what became of Martha.

Isaac Adamson married Elizabeth Hamby in 1868 in Texas County; when he died, he left 3 children that I know of: Melissa, Elizabeth and Mary Adamson. I have not been able to find his wife or children after his death.

Would love to have any help/suggestions, etc.

I have a major brick wall in Jasper Missouri, I seem to have lost my GG Grandfather Leroy P Gibson's family, it's not like they weren't well known back in the early 1800's...he just fell between the cracks. We know that Tryon Gibson is related in someway, just not for sure how...Leroy's wife Sarah Onstott was the sister of John D. Onstott b 19 Oct 1818 judge and prominent citizen of Jasper County. (need his date and place of burial) I have found the marriage certificates for all the Onstotts except Sarah Onstott b 1821 Jackson, Jasper, MO and Leroy P Gibson b 1822 Tennessee. Another relative by marriage was Thacker Vivion. Surely someone out there has some family story handed down about the Gibsons that went to Texas around 1850 and settled in Goliad, Texas. Any assistance would be gratefully accepted.
    KINDest regards,
    Nancy

Bonnie, you did leave a message on the Missouri site for I read it. My 5th great-grandfather was a very early settler of Camden County, Missouri -- in fact the town was named for him - Whitesburg. He was David White, son of Thomas White, who left his family & started a new life in Missouri. He still has descendents who live there.

My gggrandfather, Benjamin Franklin Cole (who always went by Frank Cole), was born in 1837 in Penna. At some point in time, he ran away from home and went to the "Wild West". I did find him on the 1860 census in Independence, Jackson, Missouri. It looked like he was living in a boarding house belonging to E. A. Cox. There are 8 men in their 20's living there. Frank is listed as being a mail conducter and there are two men who are coach drivers (one is also from Pa.). According to Frank's obituary, "His younger days were spent in the "wild West' where he saw service as a mail carrier for several years" and from another obit "Deceased was a native of Pa., went west as a young man and drove overland stage on the old Santa Fe trail from Fort Levenworth, Kansas to the Pacific coast". I realize the Santa fe trail did not go to the Pacific coast so that obit was quite accurate.
I also found a Kansas state census from 1859 and there was a Frank Cole, single, living in Leavenworth County, township of Deleware but there was not enough information to be able to tell if that is "my" Frank Cole.
Are there yearly tax records for Jackson County were I could find out how long Frank was in Independence? Is there anyway to find out who he may have worked for as a mail conducter or stage coach driver?
I also found a Frank Cole in the Union Army, having enlisted out of St. Louis as a private in 1861. Again, I don't have enough information to find out if that is "my" Frank Cole and am not sure where to find more.
Frank left Missouri sometime after that and was married in 1865 in Pa. I've yet to find out where. He was a tricky ancester to follow. If any one could give me some hints on how to find him in and around Missouri, I would greatly appreciate it.

I am the great granddaughter of John and Lucy (Louisa) Davis. I am looking for information on John Davis(for now)as I would like to finish our family tree on his side. John was born in Indiana, on April 20, 1848, married Louisa (Lucy) Boschert in St. Charles Mo on Aug. 20, 1878. I would like to know his parents names.
"Crows laid him on a fence post and the sun hatched him" John Davis' description of where he came from. (by John Adams)
According to the 1860 Census from St. Charles, Mo. it looks like John lived with the Ino H.Newby family, his sister V. lived with the J. H. Daniel family, and sister Rachel lived with the T. P. Grantham Familyy and it is unknown where his other 2 sisters were, this may be why John described where he came from in this fashion.

I found death certificates for most of my Mo. relitives. 4 of them say that burial is in Braymer, Mo. Are there sites that list gravesites? The 4 are John Foster Painter, his wife Samilda (Millie), their son Samuel Lee, and a granddaughter- Lois Virginia Campbell.
  • Sue McCormick

I looked up Braymer and found that it is in Caldwell County, which is about a half hour to an hour east of St. Joseph, Mo. (Actually, the town of Hamilton, home of J. C. Penney) is that distance away from St. Joe, along US Highway 36; I'm not quite sure how far away Barymer is. St. Joseph (and Buchanan Co.) have an active genealogical society. Perhaps they would know.

Hi, everyone. My mother's side settled in St. Charles County in 1811, the CANNON and GROTJAN families. The Cannons migrated there from North Carolina, by way of Tennessee and Kentucky. The Grotjans were from East Prussia. I have many Cannon and Grotjan relatives still living in Missouri today, especially in the St. Charles and St. Louis areas, with some in Dalton (Grotjans), as well.
