Thank you! It's great to have you as my friend too! I am very much a cat person. I have a 19-year-old cat and as far as I am concerned she is my adopted daughter! I had two cats until recently, but one passed away on July 6. The woman with the cat was my great-grandmother, my father's father's mother. My father's parents were not "animal people" at all and he never had pets when he was growing up, but apparently my grandfather's mother felt differently! My maternal grandparents had pets and I even named my first cat after their dog Schatzi when I was four years old.

Hi Nancy, I want to thank you for being interested in my family name. I have been trying for over 6 years to find my ancestors, but to no avail. I am very proud to be a Hickman, and it was my greatest wish to show my father where he came from, but unfortunately he died before I could show him, I was able to show him that we had a Coat of Arms and that the Hickmans was first found in Oxfordshire where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D. Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were Henry Hickman who settled in Virginia in 1635, Richard Hickman settled in Jamaica in 1661, William Hickman settled in Virginia in 1655.What I could find was that it seems that we originated from Oldwinsford, Worcesterhire England. The Hickmans occupied the Castle in Stourbridge, The Family of hickman was long seated at Old Swinford and Stourbridge. The only Hickman that I can find that came to South Africa was Edward Hoste Hickman born 1828 or 1834. His father was Rev. Henry Hickman who was th Curator of Oldwinsford, Worchestershire. They occupied the castle in Stoutbridge. They were very wealthy and also had a clothiers trade. Edward Hoste Hickman ran away from home at the age of 14 from Marlborough College and enlisted on HMS Ranger on 21 June 1842.There is 7 years unaccounted for where he served. He was stationed at Simonstown

Nancy: We have a Hickman geneaology that was done my a cousin of my father-in-law (both of whom are now deceased). The first Hickman's in their family came to America in the 1600's. I have tried to figure out how to upload it on the web; so far it's beyond my capability but would be glad to share info via e-mail. The thing that grabbed my attention on your site, however, were the photos of several Hornes. My maiden name was Horne and I have tried, in vain, for years to find any info on them. I wonder if you would provide me more info on those you have photos of? Thanks much. Joyce Hickman
