This group is for anyone that has an interest in the South West Ohio area. Share your links to SW Ohio that you find useful. And maybe we can help someone knock down that brick wall.
Most of my Ohio research is in Hamilton Co., Clinton Co., and Clermont Co.
I am working on my Deible line from Hamilton and Clinton Co.
My Hudson line from Clinton Co.
My Nelson line from Clermont Co.
My Kneipp line from Hamilton Co.
My Keim line from Champagne Co. and Hamilton Co.
The Zepf line in Hamilton Co.
I'm from California,so please tell me if Highland County is considered to be in southwest Ohio. I have lots of Scotch-Irish,Methodist Quinn relatives who lived there in the 19th century.
Yes Highland Co is in the SouthWest area of Ohio. I have not done a lot of research there, as my people were in Hamilton, Clermont and Clinton Counties but I will sure look around and see if I can't find some helpful links for you.
Sue,
Did you know that Highland and Clinton Counties connect to each other? I was not sure where in Highland your people were but I found some Quinn's buried in Clinton Co. I will post them in the Discussion Forum.
Hi Louise,
It seems as though it is. I did some hunting around and Piqua is in Miami County, just north of Montgomery County where Dayton is. I will do some hunting around and try to find some useful site for that area, as well as the other Counties I found to be considered Southwest Ohio.
thank you for checking so fast. im checking out a relative on my husbands side. a john rayner who was married to a elizabeth wainwright. i have info already on a jabez rayner who was born in piqua. so my rayner check only went to john. wondered if there was info on his dad and mom.
Louise,
I will see what i can find. In the hunting I have done so far Miami Co. has a lot of info on line with there library and genealogical society. But I have to work in the AM so I will post some things tomorrow on here and do some more hunting.
I have added Libraries and Genealogical Societies for all the South West Counties. They are in the Discussion Forum listed under South West Libraries or Genealogical Societies, there is a post for each.
I also did some rearranging in there. I put all the things that were posted for a County in a thread for the County. I will add more to the County as I get more sites. I also have not listed all the Counties yet but will work on that the next day or so.
I hope this will make it a little easier to find things . You will not have to really hunt all the pages in the Forum to find info for the County you are looking for, I hope.
If you look in the thread for Hamilton County Information you will find 2 different link's for City Directories. The second one is not the library, it is a guy that had been putting them on line. There are some Norwood directories on there as well as Cincinnati.
I can look through the books I have, do you have any kind of dates?
Just now doing a google search I found a few things that I don't know if you have seen:
Miami County Ohio Genealogical Researchers:
http://www.tdn-net.com/genealogy/sources.htm
Miami Valley Inventors 1814-1875: A Historical Database @ the Libraries‏:
http://www.libraries.wright.edu/find/gov/patent/inventors/index.php?alpha=r
Piqua Civic Hall of Fame:
http://www.piqua.lib.oh.us/WebSite/localhistory/lh5civichallfame.htm#George%20Rundle%20(1847-1917)
thank you so much for all the work you have done helping me. the inventor and hall of fame are different rayners but it has helped me so i can check. the hall of fame john rayner is the wrong age. might be relatives.
Louise,
As best as I can figure is...when you post a comment an 'x' shows up so you can delete the post you made. Much like if you add a 'discussion' after you post it there is a thing at the bottom that gives you 15 minuets to edit the post.
Hello..I am from Scioto County, OH, and I have ancestors in these families from southern OH and KY...Blevins, Boggs, Brown, Guilkey(inlaws), Holsinger, Lyons, Parker..to name a few!! I would be happy to exchange and share info.........
Hi Brenda do happen to know of any good sites for researching in Scioto County? That is not a County I have ever done research in so I don't know of any thing that might be of help to someone. The sites I have added I have just found doing searches on the internet.
Hi Lori...Well, some of my info I don't have access to at the present time because of the distance and some may not exist on the web anymore..because I have been working on my family's many sides for so long!!..But to begin with, if you are in the area drop by the Portsmouth Public Library's great lil' genealogy room downstairs..hours and info are at..www.portsmouth.lib.oh.us/genealogy.....
This is a new site, I believe, and I skimmed thru it and can't wait to go check it out...www.ohiogenealogyexpress.com/scioto/........This next one took a minute
to find and I was glad I could because it is an archive and it has lots of great stuff....http://web.archive.org/web/20031207010702/www.scioto.org/Scioto/
catalogs/catalog.html.......Now, if you go into Articles and Stories and find The
Story of a Hill Feud...that is some of my ancestors, especially the Browns and Holsingers-with all their craziness!!......There is always Rootsweb and they have Scioto County, OH, in there somewhere, too....If I can help ya, just let me know.
Hi Lori...when you type in the info for the archived articles, you will no doubt go to the Wayback Machine...type the same info in their box and the smaller box leave marked "any"....you will get there, I promise!! Sorry.....
Thanks Brenda! As far as I know I do not have any family from Scioto county, but I wanted some links to put in the Scioto County Discussion for if anyone else that has family from there.
I do have the Portsmouth Library in the Discussion for South West Ohio Libraries. Would you mind if I add these other links to the Scioto County Discussion or you can add them there if you would like.
I thought it would be easier for people looking if all the sites for a County were together rather than have to go through all the post looking.
Lori, go right ahead and add whatever info I have given you...I do have family info in some of my files in my email I can access here that I had forgotten..If there is anything else I can help with, just let me know........
I'm looking for information on the CAUGHRAN family who lived in Ross Co.,OH. circa 1800. My 2xgreat-grandfather was Garret W.CAUGHRAN who was born in 1806 the son of Benjamin & ? I don't know the name of his mother yet. The mother died & Benjamin took his 6-7 children & moved to SE IL. where they stayed in Lawrence Co.,IL.
Thanks for any help! Also, I'd like to hear from any descendants.
I have not done much research in Ross Co. but I did some searching last night. Sorry to say, so far I have not found any thing more than you seem to have. But I will keep hunting around and see if I can come up with anything new for you.
Pam,
No worries. I have been away for a few days myself. We had a death in the family and I have been spending a lot of time with my cousin's and Uncles. The loss of my Aunt was very sad but the rest of us have had a great time remembering wonderful times and sharing Great pictures. I even ended up with a picture of my Great Great Grandfather and some pictures of my Dad when he was a young boy.
But the great mailing list I am on have been busy so i am going to post some more links. And I have not given up on looking for your Caughran family in Ross Co.
I have researched a number of ancestral lines in southeast Adams Co. It seems as if members of some of the families resided in what became Scioto Co. once its western boundary with Adams Co. was set in the early 1800s. I am particularly interested in families named Montgomery along that line in Scioto Co. Samuel Montgomery settled in Stouts, Green Twp., Adams Co., ca. 1798-99. Either a couple of his sons disappeared or died, or other of his children or grandchildren disappeared, especially where they seem to have also spent time in Scioto Co. Additionally, a well known Hugh Montgomery family from PA seem to pass through this area and then move on to Decatur Co., Indiana, just after his married daughter and son-in-law from Adams Co., migrate there, and later Samuel's widow migrates there and seems to have ties to the Hugh Montgomery family. Her maiden name was Barker and she may have married Samuel about 1790 in PA. If anyone can provide any clues to the general settlement of southwest Scioto Co., and families there that earlier may have been counted in Adams Co., I would appreciate it. I am also specifically trying to find out what happened to Leman Gifford and Elizabeth Montgomery Gifford. They had some tie to Scioto Co. He seems to have died or disappeared right after 1840, then she disappears. One of the eight children, Nancy Gifford Bennington, has been found in adulthood, but she was already married about the time her parents go missing. I have had good luck figuring out lives from learning the history of settlement in these areas; I haven't learned much about Scioto Co. Thank you for any help.
I don't know if you have seen this site before or not but I thought I would throw it out there for you. (it is a good link you will have to copy and paste it, for some reason links on the comment wall do not come across as live links)
http://members.cox.net/swarling/gifford/monmouth0001.htm
this is a site of the descendants of Annaniah GIFFORD.
I also found these two sites that might give you some history:
Adams County, Ohio Genealogical Records Information
http://www.myohiogenealogy.com/oh_county/ad.htm
Scioto County, Ohio Genealogical Records Information
http://www.myohiogenealogy.com/oh_county/sc.htm
I will add these two links to the county page they are for so they will be easy to just click on if any one needs them.
Doing Google search I found a few hits for Leman Gifford, but they were more Civil War related and I don't know if that is too late in time for your Leman.
As I have time I will hunt around and see if I can find anything else.
Thank you very much. I will check these out. Meantime, Leman's youngest son was Leman, Jr. and he was born about 1841 so the Civil War period would not be too late for him. I am also aware that this area produced many soldiers. Samuel Montgomery had four grandsons (all brothers) who served and all returned to Adams Co.
I went to Google and entered Leman Gifford Ohio
Just those three words and I looked at about the first 5 or 6 pages of hits. Sometimes I find that with Google searches there really are some great goodies even on the ninth and tenth pages of hits. You know better what you are looking for than I do so you might find something that I over looked.
That is how I found the site for the descendants of Annaniah GIFFORD and saw the hits for Google Books. You might want to give it a try and see if any of it is info that is helpful to you.
Have you seen these 2 sites? I searched for them the same was as I did for Leman Gifford. Wit both of these names there were hits for Google books. For Hugh one of the Google books was the history of Adams Co. OH.

I just wanted to let you all know that I am going to be away for the next 3 days. We are going to a Chaffin family reunion this weekend. We leave tomorrow and will return sometime Sunday. I will check in here as soon as I get back.
I have posted all the links I have gathered from the many mailing list I am on, and I will start collecting more once I get back.
If anyone has any links to add that they use and find helpful, please add them. You can add them to the discussion forum they go with or you can add them here on the comment wall and I will put them in a discussion when I get back.
Per your post of Sept. 11, I did check the two websites. The data at the second site I already had. I did scrutinize the site on Hugh Montgomery. I have pretty much come to the conclusion that my Samuel Montgomery was not closely related to this Hugh Montgomery even though Hugh et al. eventually settled in Decatur Co., IN as did Samuel's daughter, Nancy Montgomery and her husband Wm. Rogers whose father was a neighbor of Samuel's near Stouts, Green Twp., Adams Co., OH and Wm. Rogers, Jr.'s brother, Oliver, also married one of Samuel's many daughters. It was interesting to learn that Hugh and wife and some others were buried on a farm that became wooded over and was later cleared off, while Wm. and Nancy, and her widowed mother, Margaret Barker Montgomery and various children and grandchildren were buried at Shiloh Cemetery, specifically developed from donated land for the Methodists of the area. I believe that Samuel and Margaret may be the couple without children (yet) listed in the census of Washington Co., PA in 1790 and that he was probably from Ulster in general (no. Ireland). No record he served in the Revolution (too young and not in the colonies yet probably); but he did only have one arm.
I am now trying to learn if the Wm. Montgomery of Scioto Co. was related to Hugh, Samuel, or was Samuel's son, Wm. That person reportedly owned a fair bit of land in Scioto Co.
We got back a while ago, but I have had a lot of personal things come up that I am dealing with.
I have been collecting links from the many mailing list I am on and will continue to post them as I make a little more time. I am helping my daughter get a house ready to move into. We have been painting and scrubbing and shampooing carpet. She moves in on the 20th and now we have most of the hard work done, so I hope to start having some time to deal with what I like;~)
My grandfather, Howard Sidney Shoemaker, was born in 1898 in, Hillsboro, Highland County, Ohio. I am interested in information concerning his father, Samuel David Shoemaker of Ohio, or his mother, Nora A. Scott Shoemaker of Ohio. Jim Bridges.
