My 2xgreat-grandfather was Thomas Byrne born circa 1815 in possibly County Sligo Ireland. I know nothing about his parents etc. I don't know when he came to America either. He married Mary McAndrew in Washington Co.,IN. on 28 June 1839, They lived in Knox Co.,IN.(the next county over). He died 7 Nov.1890 in Vincennes,Knox Co.,IN. She died 3 Feb.1887 in Vincennes,Knox Co.,IN. I descend through their son John Byrne who was born 14 Dec.1847 in Vincennes,Knox Co.,IN. He married Martha Mary Caughran 29 Aug.1869 in Lawrence Co.,IL.(across the Wabash River from Knox Co.,IN.). John Byrne died 18 Aug.1814 in Vincennes,Knox Co.,IN. Martha Mary Byrne died 30 Oct.1920 in Vincennes,Knox Co.,IN.

I was told the original name in Ireland was O"Byrne.

If you have a Byrne connection please tell us about it.
  • Jim Avery

Hello My Byrne connection is my great-greatgrandfather, James Byrne b. ca 1817 in Ireland probably Co. Wicklow. His wife was Catherine Broderick. They came to Boston in 1845 with children James, Luke, Patrick, Catherine and one more daughter whom I can't think of at the moment. They eventually made their way to Syracuse NY. My greatgrand parents were James Byrne and Margaret Ford. They lived also in Cazenovia NY where he worked for the railroad. James was in the Irish Brigade in the Civil War. We know he was at Gettysburg. Anyone related to this bunch?
  • Pamela Ann Drake

Welcome Jim! I hope you make a connection soon!

  • Catherine Murphy Gingras

Hello my Byrne ancestor is my paternal grandmother: Sarah J. Byrne Murphy. She was born in 1866 (1867?) in Cork County, Ireland. She emigrated with my grandfather, Henry Murphy in 1881 (1882?). I don't know where they entered the US, but there first (surviving) child was born in Illinois. Sarah's brother's name was James Byrne, born in 1876 in Cork County, Ireland. He came to the US in 1893, and was living with his sister in Denver, CO in 1900. Sarah's death certificate (1929) indicates that her parents were Thomas and Mary Byrne. In historical records, Byrne is often spelled Byron.

Welcome to our group! Hopefully, you can find your answers.

P.S.My great-grandfather Byrne told my mom when she was a little girl that their name in Ireland was O'Byrne. When they crossed the ocean they dropped the O & that's where they got the O for ocean. He sounded like an Irishman. They always have a good story.I thought it was cute when I heard it.
  • Shirley Burns

I am researching my husband's Byrne family from Co Wexford, Ireland. Matthew Byrne & Fanny Jordon migrated to South Australia in 1876. Matthew's parents were Andrew Byrne & Margaret Neill and they had 5 children from 1833 to 1846 (as far as I know anyway). Haven't managed to get any further back than that. The name Byrne was changed to Burns on arrival in Australia, as the family could not read or write. Any help from anybody would be much appreciated.
  • Pamela Ann Drake

    Welcome Shirley!

I hope you can connect with some cousins here soon.

  • Shirley Burns

I recently obtained the marriage certificate of Matthew Byrne & Frances Jordan, which shows that Matthew was a widower when he married Frances in 1874 in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford. I now believe that Matthew's first child, John, was with his previous wife, but I don't know who that was yet.
Frances was his 2nd wife and they had 5 children together. Their first born was Patrick b.1874 in Co Wexford. The family then migrated to South Australia where the rest of the children were born.
Matthew's parents were Andrew Bryne and Margaret Neill.
Does anybody have a link with this family?
  • Rhonda Murray

    Hi Pamela and everyone,
My name is Rhonda and thankyou for your comment. My grandmother was Elizabeth Byrne and she was from Arklow, Wicklow Ireland. She migrated to Australia in 1916 and I have only now started to track down her family in Ireland and their children. All thanks to being obsessed with family history!

Thanks to Annemarie, i think we may have found my Patrick BYRNE/BURN, who arrives in northern NB circa 1795!

  • Denis Savard

He marries a dutch girl Anne Esliger/Sleiguer (aka Ann Janr Esselinge van Hesselingen?), whom I suspect a fresh arrival form South African. Their daughter Lucille Burn marries into an Acadian family, Edouard Bernard, my 3rd great-grand-parents.

  • Sally Jeffryes

Catherine Murphy Gingras we share  Ireland ancestry. Sarah J Byrne and Anne Byrne of Wexford Irealnd.

  • Sally Jeffryes

Sarah J Byrne is from a family of at least 10 children, 7 were alive in 1911, when their father Thomas Byrne was on the Ireland census at age 79. I believe he died shortly thereafter. 4 of his children immigrated to the US, Stephen, Sarah, Anne and James. They were not from County Cork, and I think that may have been a stumbling block for you. They were from Newtownbarry, Ferns, Wexford, Ireland.

  • Pamela Ann Drake

Thanks Sally for writing & connecting with Catherine! Great news!

  • Pamela Ann Drake

My 2xgreat-grandparents,Thomas Byrne & Mary McAndrew were both born in Ireland. They were married in Washington,Daviess Co.IN. 28 June 1839. Thomas Byrne might have been from Cork,County Sligo,Ireland & Mary McAndrew might have been from County Mayo,Ireland.I think her parents were: John McAndrew & Bridget Saunders. I don't have a clue who Thomas Byrnes parents were. I understand the original name was O'Byrne. Thanks!

  • Sally Jeffryes

Thank you Pamela Drake. I already have, just waiting for her to reply back. I have been researching this line for many years and finally was given some old letters with very small hints in them. I followed them and discovered more than anyone has here-to-for known for at least 2 generations. Thank you for providing a place for me to connect and find family.

  • Sally Jeffryes

The Byrne surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'Of Byram,' a township in the parish of Brotherton, Yorkshire, formerly Byrom.

Shore family from the Wexford Byrne family are buried in the

    Calvary Cemetery; County Wexford, Ireland.

the information failed to post over when I made the post on their cemetery records below.

  • Sally Jeffryes

The name of the town was changed to Newtownbarry in recognition of its patron "James Barry, Sovereign of Naas, in recent years Newtownbarry has been restored to its former name Bunclody.

No wonder I find confusing records for the Byrne's of Newtownbarry, Wexford, Ireland.

    Hi Sally,

I haven't logged onto Genealogywise in a long time (years?).  Do you really think my Sarah J. Byrne is related to your Byrne's?  If so, I'm totally ecstatic!  I'm going to look at the 1911 Census now.  Thank you so much!

  • Sally Jeffryes

Catherine Gingras I know we are related. I have all the proof we need. I have the birth records for 9 of the children. Three old letters sent to Anne's daughter Grandma Myrtle by her aunt Margaret and Margaret's daughter Maisie Hogan from Bunclody, Ireland. I have taken the info in them little; that it is and traced all the children to snippets of info like what you wrote here about your Sarah. All together they make up a pretty clear picture, especially when added to the records I have found. Sahara's mother was Mary Cuffe of what is now Newtownbarry, Ferns, Ireland.

  • Catherine Murphy Gingras

WOOT!  My dear cousin, Sally!  This has been (at least) a decade of genealogy research for me.  What a breakthrough: 3rd cousins, once removed.  I found your 1901 & 1911 Irish Census records for the Byrnes, and spent 5 hours (in typical crazed genealogy fashion) researching Bunclody and Clohamon.

  • Sally Jeffryes

Pamela Ann Drake Thank you for this site, as you can see Catherine Murphy Gingras

and I have found each-other and connected; now all we need to do is help each-other find or Irish past, (in Ireland) and we have a good start.
