I am trying to put together the family of Rudolph Brack/Brock. He was born in Switzerland, and died February 15, 1748 somewhere in Virginia. I think it is most likely Shenandoah County. I am descended from his son Frederick, born in Germany died in North Carolina. I know Rudolph had at least 2 children born in the USA. Rudolph was also called "Rudy" and "Rudal". I would like to find where he is buried and find more information about his wife Anna Maria.
    Thanks! (and Hello everyone!)

Marriage records for Caroline County begin in 1787. I believe Jacob Burruss lived in St. Margaret's Parish. The Parish Register for that parish is missing and presumed lost or destroyed. I learned this from the Clerk, Caroline Circuit Court this morning.

  • Mary V Johnson

My father's family, the Johnsons, are all from Virginia.  Some live there now.  My father's name was Clarence E. Johnson b. 1933 and his parents were Charles E. Johnson and Carrie Virginia.  I am in the beginning of this process.  My dad grew up in Culpeper, VA.
  • Mary V Johnson

I am not sure where to start although I have written here before. I have received some records that state that my father's family goes back about 6 generations in and around Culpeper, Va. The first one I have a record for is James Johnson
b about 1714. He married Ann Norman about 1770. They had 10 children. Any ideas about how I might find out where HE came from? I live in Oregon. I am beginning this process and am curious about so many things but if someone gives me a direction I will run with it. Thank you.
  • Mary V Johnson

I just discovered I made a mistake!! I mixed up generations!! James Johnson was born about 1714 but no idea about anything else. Ann Norman was his daughter in law. I am trying to find out about Virginia in 1714. Thanks!
  • John Hale

Seeking info on my gg grandfather (John Hale). He was possibly born 1808-1820 in one of these Viginia counties; Grayson, Washington, or Wythe. He is show in the 1850 census for Perry County, KY with his wife Sally (Sarha Fawbush, born about 1822 in Sullivan County, TN), and the 1860 census for Magoffin County, KY. His son William was born about1842 in Russel County, Virginia. Thanks for any help.

I have just created a website for my Barnetts who migrated to Virginia from Ireland.
I plan to add more documents at a later date, but need to get it going.

    it is: http://www.barnetts-r-us.com
Right now It may not come up in a search.  I found it by Googling:
"Barnetts in Kentucky".   Please take a look at it!
  • John Hale

Need any info anyone can give me on how to find adoptions or hiring of children from one family to another, such  as Aker, Akers, Acre, Acres to a Hale family between 1800-1820. Probably in one of these Virginia counties: Grayson, Washington, or Wythe. The adoptions or hiring could be across county lines.

My name is John Hale, my gg grandfather – John Hale could have been born in one of these Virginia counties: Grayson, Wyhte, or Washington. His oldest son, Wlliam stated in a document that John was born about 1808 near Avington, VA. I could not find Avington, but I did find Abingdon, Washington County, VA, but no proof of John’s birth there. My gg grandfather is shown in the 1850 census for Perry County, KY and the 1860 census for Mogoffin County, KY, both of these census show John with his wife Sarah “Sally” Fawbush and children.

I had a yDNA test performed at Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) and the only Hale I match at the Hale DNA Project is a know Hale cousin. FTDNA notified me of another match with a person with the surname Aker. I didn’t understand this at first, then I discovered that my known cousin also matched this person with the Aker surname. This make me think that my gg grandfather is not a Hale, but an Aker who was adopted by a Hale family or hired by a Hale family and changed his name.

    Thanks for any help.

  • Mary E. Lohmeyer

I currently live in Richmond, VA and upon occasion get to the State Library and to various sites around the state. Most all of my various ancestors originally came from or through VA.

  • Mary E. Lohmeyer

Ray, For fairly recent death records in VA try:

For earlier records, try the State Library or local court houses/historical societies.

Update on my research of my Hale line.

A before unknown cousin was located who is the great granddaughter of Henry Hale a brother to John Hale, my great grandfather. She stated that her mother (Mary Quinn) always told her and her brother they were not really Hale. They were AKERS. Her mother told them an Aker was adopted either by Henry Hale or his father John Hale, my great great grandfather.

Would any one know of any Acker/Aker/Akers that was taken in by a Hale family? Thanks for any help.

NANTZ/NANCE, WILLINGHAM/WINNINGHAM.  Lunenburg County, VA.  Narcissa D. Claybrook (nee Nantz/Nance) listed in Tavener Nance will.  Does not say if she is a daughter of his or not.  Narcissa married WPD Claybrook in 1827 in Kentucky. She was my 3rd gt. grandmother, and I would like to be able to say that she was the daughter of Tavener and Mary Willingham Nance, but it's hard to find written proof.  Mary Willingham was the daughter of Gerald and Mary Johnson Willingham.  Have been working on this for so long.  Now I need to find some help with it.  Thanks.

  • Bob Mooney-Pa

I am looking for someone who can look for info on a Martin Mooney who joined the Rev. War in Albemarle County about 1775. He was in Capt. William Fontaines Regiment and Col Charles Lewis 4th Va Reg.

  • elaine langlois

I have just joined this group. My Alsop/Alsup ancestors came from England to Virginia in the 1660's as indentured servants. They were George Alsop and his wife Ann Ossippe.Their ggreat grandson Lt.Benjamin Alsop fought in the Rev.War.Perhaps I can help Bob Mooney and his search.Have you looked on Ancestry.com and other sites for info?

  • Bob Mooney-Pa

Yes I have. I have some info on him but not much. Looking for his place of birth. From what I have he was born abt July 1752.

  • elaine langlois

Briefly I've looked around for Martin Mooney.Saw the many pages of his pension application but didn't see a place or date of birth.I found this unusual because my ancestor Ben Alsop was asked and provided those two answers. He got his info from the family bible. What about finding the marriage certificate for Martin and Patsey Gray..that may have a place of birth.I note that Martin's name is linked to Albemarle births in the History of Albemarle Co.Appendix No.4.Could this be a clue? I have put out a query on another Va.site.

  • Bob Mooney-Pa

Thank you Elaine for your help.

  • elaine langlois

Do you go on genforum? I came across a post by a Larry Mooney concerning your ancestor and his wife.Have you seen it? Do you think the fee site Fold 3 would have more info? I have a cousin who is a member.

  • Bob Mooney-Pa

Lisa Winkleman sent me his pension record from 3Fold.  Larry is a cousin of mine who lives in Kansas.

  • Winifred McNabb

Have you checked the DAR ancestor records?  I just went online and found a Martin Mooney who is credited with service in NC.  Believe the wife was named Patsy.  There is also a Richard Mooney, Albemarle County.  You can write to the NSDAR Library and sometimes get copies of the documentation that was used.

  • John Barrett Robb

Bob, the 11 pages of Martin Mooney's pension file are available online at Heritage Quest, which many libraries subscribe to, and some of these allow you to access the HQ databases by just entering your library card number.  I too looked through the papers, which include the first page of the letter your posted, and I note that in his pension correspondence of 8Aug1820 Mooney noted that he was "aged sixty seven years since last July" (technically the previous month, but I suppose he meant July of 1819, hence the inferred birth date of July 1752.  The papers include an 1822 deed from Martin and wife Patsey Mooney of AlbemarleCo to Robert Mooney of RockbridgeCo (just to the west over the Blue Ridge) of 60a of their AlbemarleCo land.  This document is the only item in the file that names Martin's wife, and I suspect that it appears in the file for that reason.  I also think that's likely that Robert was this couple's son, even though (a) this was not a deed of gift - Robert is said to have paid $300 for the land; and (b) Robert would have been only 17, since a single unnamed son aged 15 was referred to in Martin's letter of 1820.  Technically, minors couldn't make binding contracts, so could repudiate any deals that they had made on turning 21, but there are exceptions for in-the-family deeds.  Furthermore, this deed includes an unusual provision reserving the use of the land to the grantees for the duration of their lives.  I think, therefore, that this deed was included in the file to provide evidence identifying the members of Martin's family - his wife Patsey, and his son Robert.  Finally, the Richard Mooney, a summary of whose pension records appears on the second page of the letter you posted, showed that he too enlisted from AlbemarleCo at about the same time, so this Richard is probably a brother of Martin.  There should be plenty more about these Mooneys in the records of AlbemarleCo, since Martin appears to have lived there all his long life.

Here's the link to the HQ pension file, though it may not work.

  • Bob Mooney-Pa

Thanks for the info so far. I'll look into all this and let you all know what I find out. Plus if I need anymore help.

  • elaine langlois

    Hi Bob,

I should have said that I found the many pages of Martin's pension application on Ancestry.com.

  • Linda Jones Fitt

Researching John A. Jones and Martha Humphreys of Fluvanna County. They were married in 1783, marriage registered in the county on December 9, 1785. There were two gentlemen by the name of John Jones in, or around, Fluvanna county at this time. On the personal property records one was know as John Jones - son of David, or sometimes Capt. My ancestor is known as John Jones - powder. Unable to find his birth or death records. Also interested in knowing why he was called powder (gunpowder?). Their son was Solomon Jones. He was born in Fluvanna county, but died in Barbour county, WV on May 4, 1862. Thanks!
