I can not trace back past my grandfather, George Allen Lafield born March 12, 1874 in Shurbonne? or Sherburne, Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana. He died a week after my parents were married (July 5, 1946) so I never even got to meet him. i think I have located a picture of him but I can't even be sure of that. My parents, uncles, grandparents, etc. have all passed on during the 40 years I was out of Louisiana and am in kind of a dilemma. The State Archives Office holds no records before 1911 for any parish except Orleans Parish and the courthouse in Pointe Coupee burned some time last century. I had expected the state would maintain backups/copies/photos of parish records but I was wrong. To complicate matters more, there is another family of LaYfields also living in Pointe Coupee around the same time and from what I can tell, researchers in the past have mixed up the families, unless they coincidently had children with the same names born around the same time.

Anyone got any ideas or, better yet, some solid data?

For Pointe Coupee, did you try any of the surrounding Parishes or Mississippi Counties to look for possible records? I know some of Wilkinson county, MS holdings are kept in LA.
