Genealogy Wise

The Genealogy & Family History Social Network

So I've got my photos uploaded; now what do I do with Albums?

Thankfully, albums on a Ning social network stick to a pretty conventional definition.
ALBUM -- noun -- 1. A book with blank pages for the insertion and preservation of collections, such as of stamps or photographs.
The difference being (hopefully obviously) is that those pages are electronic.

Basically albums on Genealogy Wise allow you to organize your photos into nice groupings. As far as I can tell, you can have as many albums as you want, even though your account is limited to 100 photos. A single photo can be placed in multiple albums (and only counts as 1 photo towards your 100 photo limit). You can add other people's photos to your album (and it does not count against your 100 photo limit).

Once you have an album setup, you can view it as a slideshow that scrolls through only the photos in that album. You can also then share this link with others outside of Genealogy Wise (if you have made the slideshow public), and they will be able to view the slideshow of that album. You can also get the embed code of the slideshow; so those of you with your own blog can embed the slideshow right into a blog post, or some other location on your website.

CREATE AN ALBUM

After uploading a photo you will be prompted to create an album or add the photo to an existing album; you can also opt to do neither and the photo will just appear in your photos, but not in any album.

If you opted neither, and now need to create an album; or if you'd like to create an album before you start uploading photos, start here:
  1. Click the Photos link on the toolbar.
  2. Click the My Albums link that appears below the toolbar.
  3. Click the Add an Album link that appears below the toolbar.
You'll now have the ability to give your album a title and description.
You'll also have the ability to choose from My Photos or Everyone's Photos.
Advanced Tip: If you are looking for photos with a particular tag, you can type that into the tag field and click Filter to see only photos with that tag.
  4. Add photos by dragging them from the available photos on the left, into the album on the right (where it says "Drag Your Photos Here").
You can also drag a photo to the box near your album title to give the album a cover photo.
  5. Once you've completed dragging in the desired photos, click Save.

MODIFY AN ALBUM

If you already have an album created, and just want to make some changes, start here:
  1. Click the Photos link on the toolbar.
  2. Click the My Albums link that appears below the toolbar.
  3. Click the album you want to modify.
  4. Click the Edit Album link below the photos.
You'll now have the ability to change your album title and description.
You'll also have the ability to choose from My Photos or Everyone's Photos.
Advanced Tip: If you are looking for photos with a particular tag, you can type that into the tag field and click Filter to see only photos with that tag.
  5. Add photos by dragging them from the available photos on the left, into the album on the right (where it says "Drag Your Photos Here").
You can also drag a photo to the box near your album title to change the album cover photo.
  6. Remove photos by dragging them from the album on the right and dropping them with the photos on the left.
  7. Once you've completed your changes, click Save.

Remember that you can place a photo in more than one album, and that you can have an album that contains a mixture of your photos and other people's photos.

As always, let me know if you have any questions.
